Student answer (Band 6.5)
The preservation of ancient civilizations and historical sites buildings versus the construction of modern facilities is still an ongoing debate. While some individuals believe that the restoration of traditional landmarks despite the financial burden, others believe that government should replace them with new, modern buildings.
On one hand, restoring old buildings is essential for maintaining culture heritage and boosting local economies. Historical places such as town halls, famous monuments and ancient art galleries are a fine example of nation’s past and shape of its own identity. For instance, cities like Rome, Italy, Paris is visited by millions of people for historical monuments because they have highly invested in preserving them.
On the other hand, replacing the old monuments with the new buildings for economic advantages is not a right thing because you’re vanishing the old historic buildings which was built by our ancestors and are very famous and visited by millions annually. So it should stay as it is and not replaced by any fancy building.
In my opinion, I would say that replacing our culture and historic structure with fancy and modern buildings, cafes, and mall is not a great idea because the new generation would not know anything about our culture. I would like to add that more and more knowledge should be provided to students and upcoming generations about our culture, values and ancient architecture, art galleries. Government should add it in the textbooks and schools/colleges should organize trips to monuments with a tour guide to teach the students about our culture.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention the importance of cultural heritage and economic benefits, the arguments regarding why governments might prefer modern buildings are underdeveloped and repetitive. The essay would benefit from more specific examples or deeper analysis of the 'modernization' argument. You have addressed all parts of the prompt, but the depth of discussion is inconsistent, which prevents a higher score. To improve, ensure each paragraph provides a balanced and thorough exploration of the points raised.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'On one hand' and 'In my opinion', to signal transitions. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the third paragraph where the pronoun 'you're' is used informally. Additionally, the transition between the discussion of the two views and your personal opinion could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence logically follows the previous one will help improve the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'preservation', 'historical sites', and 'financial burden'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'vanishing the old historic buildings' (which should be 'destroying' or 'demolishing') and 'not a right thing'. The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and avoiding informal phrasing like 'not a great idea' or 'fancy building'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Paris is visited', 'buildings which was built') and awkward phrasing ('the restoration of traditional landmarks despite the financial burden' is a fragment). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the control over complex structures is inconsistent. To reach a higher band, focus on correcting basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your complex sentences are grammatically complete and accurately punctuated.
