Some people believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored, even though this can be costly. Others argue that governments should replace them with new, modern buildings.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Restoration of ancient buildings is a thoughtful initiative to preserve the culture and history of generations. According to some speakers, this is an appreciation to hold the roots, while others have the opposite view. They have a thought to demolish them to make new buildings. My perspective is to provide educational and health care services by constructing modern facilities.
To commence with the preservation of former premises, it is quite acceptable that modern society could be aware of the culture, history and sacrifices of their predecessors. They could make efforts to improve the areas of development in which their society was devoid of. Additionally, art galleries and museums could be a great source of income to a country if they serve as tourist attractions. For instance, in developing countries where there are less income sources, they can have an advantage if more people come to see their art and pay for that.
In opposition, there should be facilities such as schools, hospitals, libraries and gymnasiums by demolishing the old buildings. There are more chances of growth in terms of finances and alleviation in the job sector. If citizens are educated and well-off, there are greater chances of a healthy society, and they can automatically connect to their roots by studying their background. For example, history and culture can be added to the school curriculum, and art can be exhibited in libraries, and the achievements of great athletes & sportsperson should be portrayed in the gymnasium to raise awareness among youngsters.
To conclude, I would recommend that heritage landmarks should be replaced by contemporary structures to meet the requirements of the latest generation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the cultural value of restoration versus the practical utility of modern facilities. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the argument for replacing buildings with hospitals and schools is a strong point, but it could have been supported with more specific examples of how this impacts a local community. The position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion clearly restates the writer's stance. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explored with more depth and specific detail.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Additionally', and 'In opposition' are used effectively to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more sophisticated. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing viewpoints. Overall, the flow of the essay is clear and the structure supports the reader's understanding of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'predecessors', 'alleviation', and 'contemporary structures'. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices or collocations, such as 'appreciation to hold the roots' or 'there are less income sources'. While these do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Using more precise collocations and a wider variety of topic-specific vocabulary would enhance the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a reasonable level of control over basic grammar, though some errors persist, such as 'They have a thought to demolish them' (awkward phrasing) and 'there are less income sources' (should be 'fewer'). Punctuation is generally accurate, and the errors present do not cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer should focus on increasing the variety of complex sentence structures and ensuring greater accuracy in subject-verb agreement and word order.
