IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored, even though this can be costly. Others argue that governments should replace them with new, modern buildings.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Heritage buildings and monuments are the imperative part of the country's culture. A segment of people feels ancient structures like city halls and art galleries must be retained in their original form, regardless of whether it is expensive. Another segment believes that diplomats should renew the building with a new architect. In this essay, I will give two reasons for both views and will give my own opinion in support of the former notion.

On the one side, retaining the counties' historical places will lure more people, which will eventually increase tourism. Even though the government has invested the finances in these buildings, they will be getting paid if they set basic minimum fees for visiting such places. For example, a recent study in Alberta regarding funds generated by the Royal Alberta Museum is far more than the basic pay of 10 individuals. Moreover, preserving heritage will connect today's people or youth with the ancient culture and roots. This can increase the bond between different generations and will reduce the generation gap.

On the other hand, renovating old buildings with modern equipment is beneficial, as it is cheaper and will be safer for the people to visit. The antique building can be fragile, and there are chances of collapsing because of the wear and tear it has been through over time and environment. Also, if the government equips these buildings with modern technology, it will be highly convenient for the people who are visiting the place.

In my opinion, we should not lose any antique halls or galleries, as they are the only source through which we can connect to our ancestors. We can know what kind of work they were involved in, what the thought process was, and how they navigate through their lives. For instance, ancient buildings in India were painted and architected in such a way that the walls and roofs were depicting real stories, common lifestyles, and their way of living.

To conclude, the preservation of old buildings can vanish the generation gap, helping in connecting today's youth with ancient culture along with the generation of money. However, new technology helps navigate the place and it will increase the quiality of the building.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic benefits of tourism and the safety concerns regarding old structures. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the argument for preservation is well-supported with examples like the Royal Alberta Museum and Indian architecture, the counter-argument regarding modern replacement is less detailed. The term 'diplomats' is used incorrectly to refer to government officials or urban planners, which slightly impacts the clarity of the argument. Overall, the position is consistent throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is generally smooth. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one side', 'Moreover', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as the use of 'the former notion' which is grammatically correct but slightly formal for the context. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic, including terms like 'heritage', 'monuments', 'renovating', and 'antique'. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice. For instance, 'diplomats' is used incorrectly to mean government authorities, and 'architected' is not standard usage in this context. The phrase 'vanish the generation gap' is also slightly unnatural; 'bridge' or 'narrow' would be more appropriate. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout, and the vocabulary is adequate for the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a good attempt at using complex sentences, such as 'Even though the government has invested the finances in these buildings, they will be getting paid if they set basic minimum fees'. However, there are persistent errors in grammar and punctuation, such as 'the imperative part' (should be 'an imperative part') and 'they navigate through their lives' (tense inconsistency). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication, and the overall control of grammar is sufficient for a Band 6.0.
