Student answer (Band 7.0)

Some people say that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries should be restored, even though it is expensive, while others argue that it should demolished and replaced with new and modern buildings. I agree more with the former than the latter and there is a plethora of reasons to support my statements. In this essay, we will discuss the both the arguments with its positives and negatives.

Old monuments are the symbol of our culture, tradition and struggles faced by our ancestors, and it is the duty of all the citizens to protect it as a study material for our future generations. The art gallery and museum of Shri. Raja Ravi Varma at Trivandrum, which is a small city in a South Indian province called Kerala, is a perfect example of how a monument should be conserved. It is architectural marvel that had been preserved since generations.

Another benefit is that, it attracts more tourists, and their influx would result in contributing more money to governments fund, which will help the authorities to bring more job opportunities and developments to the society. In addition, it will help the archeologist and historians to study and develop more ideas from our past.

However, considering the cost of preserving these buildings, many still say that, new and modern building should be constructed as a replacement to this. Also, they think that old buildings are indeed a misfit to the new era of architecture, and it is always cost effective to construct new buildings.

To conclude with, I stand with people who say that, old monuments and art galleries should be conserved for studies and making the society aware of their origin and tradition. Though, it is expensive and uneasy to maintain

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all parts of the prompt by discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant, such as the cultural significance of monuments and the economic benefits of tourism. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the argument regarding the cost-effectiveness of new buildings is mentioned but not fully explored or contrasted with the long-term value of restoration. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is expanded with more depth or a more detailed explanation of the implications.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Another benefit is that' and 'In addition', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'To conclude with, I stand with people who say that'. Furthermore, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the use of 'this' in the final paragraph, which lacks a specific antecedent. Improving the variety and sophistication of your linking words will help create a smoother, more natural progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'plethora', 'architectural marvel', and 'influx'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'it should demolished' (should be 'they should be demolished') and 'governments fund' (should be 'government funds'). You also use 'study material' in a way that feels slightly unnatural in this context. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise academic collocations would elevate your score. Focus on using words in their correct grammatical form and context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and pluralization, such as 'it should demolished' and 'the both the arguments'. Additionally, there are punctuation errors, such as the unnecessary comma after 'However, considering the cost of preserving these buildings,'. Some sentences are slightly fragmented or lack proper articles. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with correct verb forms and consistent subject-verb agreement.
