Student answer (Band 6.5)

Several people think, the government should renovate new and modern buildings rather than restoring old buildings such as art galleries and town halls, although which can be overpriced. This essay will discuss both views before presenting my own opinion.

On the one hand, old building represent the history. The buildings which was manufactured by expensive materials demonstrate the living lifestyle of the kings such as the wars which was fought by them. To illustrate, in Sikh history some Sikh temples such as Shri Harmandir Sahib in Punjab the walls of that temple are preserved for showing their sacrifices for the religion and the wars was fought by their Rulers. Additionally, scientists can also gain more knowledge about an ancient building. Either with this they can work on the reasons behind wars and great opportunity for them to enquire the old material of the buildings.

On the other hand, modern buildings also have some benefits. Nowadays, constructing new buildings are not only affordable but also looks more elegant than older ones, which raise the shine of the country. Moreover, the material such as wood, concrete and paint are budget friendly, and convenient to use. If the government will be start working on modern buildings that assists them to use money on health sector as well on educational factor.

In conclusion, modern buildings could be designed with more visually appealing and under budget for the government. Personally, I feel that old buildings shows the cultural history of ancestors and important for the scientists for their researches.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the 'health sector' and 'educational factor' is mentioned but not fully explained or linked back to the core debate about building preservation. The introduction contains a significant error where you state the government should 'renovate new and modern buildings,' which contradicts the prompt's premise of choosing between old and new. To improve, ensure your position is clearly stated and consistently supported throughout the essay without contradictory statements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In conclusion.' However, the flow within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical. For example, the transition 'Either with this' is awkward and does not effectively link the ideas about scientific research. Additionally, some referencing is unclear, such as 'the walls of that temple,' which could be more smoothly integrated. Improving the variety and precision of your linking words will help the essay progress more naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'renovate,' 'preserved,' and 'budget friendly.' However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'overpriced' (which usually refers to a product being too expensive, rather than the act of restoration being costly) and 'raise the shine of the country.' There is also a repetitive use of basic structures. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic collocations and synonyms to express complex ideas more accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('old building represent,' 'buildings which was manufactured,' 'wars was fought') and awkward phrasing ('If the government will be start working'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure often feels repetitive. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement and refining your use of complex sentence forms, such as relative clauses and conditional structures, to ensure they are error-free.
