Student answer (Band 7.0)

Should historical buildings get renovated despite the cost required for it or should they get replaced with up to date buildings? Various collage of views exist regarding this question and various people hold different opinions for this. As per my vantage point, although latest buildings hold significant value, the significance of old architectural buildings cannot be overlooked.

First of all, those who assert that ancient sites such as huge art galleries and town halls should get attention for their renovation have certain reasons behind their assertion. Firstly, they argue that such buildings are a proof of any culture's remarkable historical background. To cite an example, new generations who embark on the journey about learning their country's history from books and paperwork, such sites can provide them living evidences of the data they found in books. Secondly, they opine that such antique buildings are entwined with tourism. People who have an obsession of travelling particularly those who are inclined towards old architecture and antique and unique pieces of art visit such buildings, therefore this can can add an exceptional raise in a country's economy. Nonetheless, the amount invested in their restoration will be recovered in no time.

On the other hand, proponents of the contrary view opine that restoration of ancient buildings is not a pragmatic approach, rather such sites should get replaced with the up to date architecture. They possess the view that modern era requires modern environment. They possess the view that trendy new buildings such as big and spacious shopping malls, food arenas and coffee bars spark the interests of new generations. For example, young individuals exude a greater inclination towards such things.

As per my opinion, although keeping the era modern and up to date is necessary, devoid of the preservation of ones history a country does not fully gets success.

Hereby, having discussed both views and analysing both schools of thought I safely reach the conclusion that favouring one approach at the expense of other may have far reaching consequences for any country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the cultural value of historical sites and the economic benefits of tourism. However, the development of the second view (replacing buildings) is somewhat brief and could benefit from more specific examples beyond general mentions of shopping malls. The conclusion is a bit abrupt, though it does summarize the position. Overall, the response is well-structured and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Secondly', 'Nonetheless', and 'On the other hand' are used to guide the reader through the arguments. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there is occasional repetition of phrasing (e.g., 'They possess the view that'). Referencing is generally clear, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some good collocations like 'remarkable historical background' and 'far reaching consequences'. However, there are some awkward word choices and minor inaccuracies, such as 'various collage of views' (a collage is a visual art form, not a collection of opinions) and 'living evidences' (evidence is an uncountable noun). While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, some choices feel slightly unnatural or misused. Expanding your range of precise academic vocabulary would help improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'a country does not fully gets success' (should be 'get') and 'favouring one approach at the expense of other' (missing an article). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some minor errors in sentence construction. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will improve your accuracy.
