Student answer (Band 7.0)
some people believe that old buildings should be restored despite the high cost, while others think that they should be replaced with modern buildings . This essay will discuss both views. I believe that important historical buildings should be preserved , but buildings that are unsafe or no longer useful can be repalaced.
To begin with, Old buildings should be protected because it has enormous number of advantages. It protects a history and identity of country. Another one is that it attracts tourists and increase the local income. For instance, many cities restore old museums and town halls because they are part of their culture heritage. The tourists often visit these places, which benefits local businesses. And historical buildings give a city its unique identity. If they are replaced , the city may lose its charm.
One the other hand , some believe that modern buildings are more practical. First and foremost reason is it has better safety standards and has more space and modern facilities. For example, A new government office can include advanced technology, better accessibility for disabled people. Moreover, new buildings are good for saving energy and environmental friendly. Along with this, modern buildings can have digital services which will improve the quality of public services and helps people to have fast government work services.
In conclusion, both restoring old buildings and constructing new ones have their own advantages. However, I believe governments should preserve buildings with historical importance while repalacing those that are unsafe or no longer serve the public effectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt. You have discussed both views—the preservation of historical buildings and the benefits of modern construction—and provided a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the mention of tourism for old buildings and accessibility/energy efficiency for new ones. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are slightly more extended; for instance, you could elaborate on the 'cultural identity' point by explaining how architecture serves as a tangible link to the past, rather than just stating it attracts tourists. Overall, the task is well-handled.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'For instance,' 'On the other hand,' and 'Moreover' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing (e.g., 'Another one is that...' is vague). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing viewpoints. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that the logical flow between sentences is smoother and less repetitive in structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'cultural heritage,' 'accessibility,' and 'environmental friendly' (though this should be 'environmentally friendly'). There are some spelling errors, such as 'repalaced' and 'repalacing,' which occur multiple times. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repeating basic words like 'buildings' or 'good' by using synonyms like 'structures,' 'edifices,' or 'advantageous.'
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('it has enormous number of advantages' should be 'they have an enormous number'), missing articles ('a history and identity of country'), and incorrect word forms ('environmental friendly' instead of 'environmentally friendly'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with spaces appearing before commas and periods. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring that your complex sentences are constructed with correct subject-verb agreement.
