Student answer (Band 6.5)

There is an ongoing debate about restoring old buildings including town halls and art galleries while some believes that restoring would cost a lot and it would be better to build replace them with modern buildings. In this essay, I am going to discuss both point of views.

On the one hand, there are those who believe that old buildings should be renovated as these buildings are our country heritage. What I mean is that if these halls gets restored it can be used as banquet halls for ceremonies and weddings. Moreover, the funds gathered from these events can be used to develop public parks, libraries and for charity purposes. In addition, restoration of vintage art galleries and museum could attract tourism from other towns, cities and even from other countries as people nowadays love to explore and learn about historical places.

On the other hand, those who argue that governments should replace them with new buildings. These buildings can be turned into apartments, homeless shelters, old age homes and dorms for students. For instance, a student residence would be a great choice due to high crisis many students can't afford rents so if old buildings are being used as residences at affordable prices it would help out the future of the country.

Taking everything into account, I personally believe that its an debatable topic and many would agree to disagree for certain reason. However, it can be decided by voting if the town halls and art galleries should stay or they should be used as an alternative option and turn into modern building.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both views and provides a personal opinion, though the opinion is somewhat neutral and lacks a clear, decisive stance. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic benefits of restoration versus the social utility of new buildings. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the argument for replacing buildings with student residences is a good point, but it could be expanded with more specific reasoning on why this outweighs the historical value. The conclusion is a bit weak as it suggests a 'vote' rather than providing a definitive personal perspective, which is a requirement of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Moreover', and 'In addition' are used to guide the reader. However, the transition between the body paragraphs and the conclusion is slightly abrupt. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel a bit disjointed due to minor grammatical errors that affect the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'renovated', 'heritage', 'banquet halls', and 'residences'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'its an debatable topic' (should be 'it is a debatable topic') and 'build replace them'. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more precise collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary to avoid repetition.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('some believes', 'halls gets restored') and missing articles or incorrect word forms ('a student residence would be a great choice due to high crisis'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band score.
