Student answer (Band 6.5)

There are many people that thinks that old buildings like town halls and art galleries should be preserved while others thinks that we should replace them with new buildings having modern architecture

On the first hand, Individuals thinks that we need to preserve the old buildings and we can renovate them for the use because we have to take care of the old cultural architecture. People feel that we can modify the old buildings from inside to use them in this modern era. I am not denying the fact that this is little expensive but this will contribute to culture.

On the second hand, people believe that we should replace them with the new buildings as in this era of modern architecture we have to be relevant in the society. Old buildings are not strong enough for use and they are riskier to live in it. Moreover the new buildings will be equipped with new technologies. With the changing time people have different needs and different taste in styles so we should also adapt the new architecture with other facilities

In conclusion, I believe that that we should keep the old buildings and should make changes to them such as installing new technologies. According to me these old buildings are important for our heritage and culture so that the new generations can see and learn about their culture by looking these buildings. However, the people who thinks to build new buildings in the place old one have also their valid reason.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the safety of old buildings is mentioned but not fully expanded with specific examples or evidence. The conclusion acknowledges the opposing view, but the overall depth of the discussion is basic. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more detailed explanations and concrete examples for each viewpoint, ensuring that your arguments are fully extended rather than just stated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use basic cohesive devices like 'On the first hand' and 'On the second hand', although these are slightly non-standard (usually 'On the one hand'). The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the use of linking words is somewhat mechanical. To improve, try to use a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother to improve the flow of your arguments.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You rely on simple terms like 'old buildings' and 'new buildings' repeatedly. While you attempt some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'cultural architecture' and 'heritage', the range is limited. There are also some minor errors in word choice, such as 'riskier to live in it' instead of 'riskier to live in'. To achieve a higher score, focus on incorporating more sophisticated synonyms and collocations related to urban planning and historical preservation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'people that thinks', 'Individuals thinks'). You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but the complex sentences often contain errors, such as 'the people who thinks to build new buildings in the place old one'. These errors are noticeable and occasionally distract the reader, although they do not completely impede communication. Focusing on basic subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
