Student answer (Band 6.5)
Many people think that ancient buildings like town halls and art galleries should be repaired, even if the restoration is expensive. Some people believe that governments have to take care of them and make them as new and modern. I will discuss both perspectives and give my opinion in the upcoming paragraphs.
On the one hand, people think of renovating old buildings, even it could be costly. Because individuals want to see the same old buildings they usually saw in their childhoods, as these become their memories, and they want to see the same things they heard from their ancestors about these ancient buildings because these have their own identities or images. For instance, maintaining the same old designs of the town halls, museums, or any old buildings takes a lot of expenses but it maintains the same value of those buildings. It also becomes an attractive image of the city or town. So the future generation can know about these buildings by seeing them and learn about them.
On the other hand, some people want that governments can handle all these buildings and change them into modern styles. By using modern technology, the old buildings look more amazing and cool. For example, nowadays people know modern technology and also find it easy to use, so they can easily use it. Thus, they think it would be cheaper and easier to see the interior of buildings.
In the conclusion, many individuals want the government to make these old buildings like new ones or modern ones, as it would cost less. However, I believe in maintaining the old buildings as they are and taking care of them, because these are the gifts from the ancestors to the modern generation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument for modernizing buildings is quite vague, relying on general statements like 'modern technology' and 'amazing and cool' rather than specific, well-supported points. While the task is addressed, the supporting arguments lack depth and could benefit from more concrete examples or logical expansion to reach a higher band. The position is consistent, but the explanation of why modernizing might be 'cheaper' is underdeveloped.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central topic. The use of cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In the conclusion' helps guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly repetitive, and the flow between sentences within paragraphs is occasionally disjointed. For example, the connection between 'modern technology' and 'easier to use' in the third paragraph is a bit abrupt. Overall, the logical progression is clear, but the use of cohesive devices could be more varied and sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'renovating', 'restoration', and 'ancestors'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simple adjectives like 'amazing', 'cool', and 'old'. There are also minor issues with word choice, such as 'make them as new' instead of 'restore them to their original state'. To improve, the student should aim for more precise and academic collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'even it could be costly' (missing 'though'), 'some people want that governments can handle' (incorrect verb pattern), and 'takes a lot of expenses' (unnatural collocation). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some awkward phrasings that slightly impede the flow. The student demonstrates an ability to construct complex sentences, but the accuracy of these structures needs improvement to reach a higher band.
