Student answer (Band 7.0)
Some people believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored even though it can be expensive. Others think that governments should replace them with new modern buildings. This essay will discuss both views before giving my opinion.
On the one hand, building new structures has many advantages. Modern buildings are usually safer, more energy efficient, and easier to maintain. They can also include better facilities, such as lifts, larger parking areas and improved technologies such as huge garden, gym, swimming pool. In addition, constructing new buildings may sometimes cost less than restoring the old ones.
On the other hand, restoring historic buildings is important because they represent a country's history and culture. Also, its unique design cannot be easily copied. Restoration required larger amount of money as well. Also, they can promote tourism from all over the world so people can know different traditions.
In my opinion, governments should restore old buildings because they are an important part of nation and history. However, if the building is badly damaged or unsafe to use, it can be replaced it with a modern one to make it better. The decision really depends on the condition of building but also its historical value. If the condition of building is weak it can fall anytime and people can be harmed.
To conclude, while modern buildings provide better facilities and lower maintenance costs, I believe that preserving historic buildings is more beneficial because they protect cultural heritage and also promote tourism.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of energy efficiency for new buildings and cultural heritage for old ones. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about 'huge garden, gym, swimming pool' in town halls is slightly unrealistic and lacks depth. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your arguments with more specific examples or logical reasoning rather than just listing features. Your position is consistent throughout, which is a strength.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices like 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In addition' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the use of 'its' in 'Also, its unique design' where the plural 'their' would be more appropriate to refer back to 'historic buildings'. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different viewpoints, which helps the overall readability of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'energy efficient,' 'cultural heritage,' and 'maintenance costs.' There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'condition of building is weak' instead of 'poor condition' or 'dilapidated.' Additionally, there are minor errors in word choice, such as 'larger amount of money' which should be 'a larger amount of money.' While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully use some complex sentences, there are recurring grammatical errors. For example, 'Restoration required larger amount of money' contains a tense error (should be 'requires') and a missing article. You also have errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'part of nation' (should be 'a nation') and 'replace it with a modern one' (where 'it' is redundant). Despite these errors, the meaning is generally clear, and the mistakes do not significantly impede communication.
