Student answer (Band 6.5)

Old buildings are a perfect way to represent the culture and architecture of any country, but with the passage of time these buildings becomes dangerous if not properly resorted because disasters like earthquake tends to become extremely dangerous for old buildings and their inhabitants as compared to new buildings. some people believes that old buildings should be resorted irrespective of cost and the other group of people are in favour of constructing modern buildings instead of resorting older ones.

The proponents of the idea that old buildings must be resorted even though this can be costly for the government, particularly believes that old heritage is asset of country and it represents our country and its culture at international level. This can perfectly be illustrated by the example that Burj khalifa in Dubai was badly damaged by earthquake a few years ago , but as this building is a depiction of culture and mark of trade for Dubai, the government resorted it at a heavy financial loss but never replaces it.

On contrary, the believers of technology and modernism suggest that we should think logically and instead of wasting money on renovation of old buildings, government should focuses on establishment of modern and up to date buildings so we stand with the world in the era of technology and represents our country and architecture at international level. Many high income countries focuses on development of modern buildings to represents the advancement in architecture at international level.

In my opinion, both groups of people are right in their own ways. Older buildings represents history and culture and they should not be completely removed. Instead of this a technical approach should be used while decide which buildings should be kept and which will be replaced by new and modern buildings. A perfect example of balance between both sides is India which one side is a hub of old architecture and on the other side it is truly competing modernism architecture too.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the cultural value of heritage versus the need for modernization. However, some arguments are under-developed. For instance, the example of the Burj Khalifa is factually inaccurate (it is a modern building, not an old one being restored), which weakens the support for the argument. To improve, ensure that examples are accurate and that the reasoning behind the 'technical approach' mentioned in the conclusion is explained in more detail to fully develop the position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each view, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'The proponents of', 'On contrary', and 'In my opinion', though some transitions are slightly mechanical or misused (e.g., 'On contrary' should be 'On the contrary'). Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'proponents', 'modernism', and 'architecture'. However, there are frequent errors in word choice and word form, such as 'resorted' instead of 'restored', 'depiction of culture' used loosely, and 'competing modernism architecture'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of the writing. Expanding your range of collocations would help move to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('buildings becomes', 'disasters... tends', 'some people believes', 'government should focuses') and article usage. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and periods. While the writer attempts complex sentences, the frequency of these basic grammatical errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for subject-verb agreement would significantly improve the accuracy.
