Student answer (Band 7.0)

some individuals argue that historical attractions such as town halls and art galleries should be restored despite the financial constraints. While others suggest that authorities should completely replace them with the completely new modern buildings. In my opinion Contemporary architecture Should be preserved as these are our cultural heritage while keeping in mind the financial limits.

Old historical buildings are a huge motivation and inspiration to the modern architecture. There are numerous buildings, bridges, and shrines which have been constructed upon the ideas of medieval architecture. Also, various historical sites which have been preserved by government, are visited by thousands of visitors every year. For example, Taj Mahal in India and the great pyramids of Egypt are highly visited historical sites. These are also our roots that connect us to our history. However, there could be situations when the restoration is not convenient and can impose hefty amounts of funds. This should be carefully planned and executed.

On the other hand Modern architecture is highly safe and equipped with technological advancements which is an example of comfort, safety and luxury. In the present era architecture has been improved exponentially with the advancements of computer software for construction and designing and the digital advancement provides another beautiful touch. Therefore, individuals are always astonished at modern buildings.

The best approach is to preserve the historical sites with the introduction of modern technology while maintaining the original architecture. With the number of visitors visiting such places, income can be generated that can be utilized to further develop such sites.

In conclusion, Old buildings should be preserved because they hold a great historical and cultural value, but financial challenges should also not to be compromised.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the cultural value of historical sites versus the safety and technological benefits of modern buildings. However, the development is somewhat uneven; while the arguments are clear, they could be extended with more depth. For instance, the suggestion to use tourism income to fund restoration is a good point, but it is introduced briefly. The position is consistent throughout the essay, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5/7.0 level of task response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'However', and 'Therefore' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and sentence-level flow. For example, the opening sentence is a fragment, and the connection between the first and second sentences in the introduction is slightly disjointed. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, justifying a Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at using more sophisticated terms like 'exponentially', 'technological advancements', and 'cultural heritage'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'hefty amounts of funds' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'should also not to be compromised' (grammatical error affecting lexical flow). While the range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score. The vocabulary is functional but not particularly varied or idiomatic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as the sentence fragment in the introduction ('While others suggest...'), missing articles ('the Taj Mahal'), and issues with verb forms ('should also not to be compromised'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but capitalization is inconsistent (e.g., 'Contemporary architecture Should'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The writer demonstrates an ability to construct complex sentences, but control over them is inconsistent.
