Student answer (Band 7.0)
People have different opinions regarding whether government should restore old monuments despite this could be expensive but other contenders believe that ancient buildings should be replaced with modern ones. This essay will discuss both perspectives before explaining why I believe in renovating old forts and palaces.
On the one hand, supporters of restoration of art galleries and town halls think that by renovating these historic building could be beneficial for economic growth. Furthermore, this initiative could bolster tourism in cities and government could earn huge revenue when tourist spend money on accommodation, travel and small businesses could grow. Consequently, old buildings would be preserved for the upcoming generation so that they could attain knowledge regarding their history.
On the other hand, those who believe that authorities should replace them with modern buildings so that cities should be developed and benefits to the individuals who are in quest of employment. As a result, if government could spend money on the new buildings there could be job opportunities to the work force and cities would look better with modern infrastructure because sometimes old buildings needs more expenses and care.
I firmly believe that old monuments such as town halls, art galleries, forts and palaces should be renovated because these have their own history which is imperative for the future generation and old buildings always attract tourists which is enriching for the country revenue. Moreover, in the cities there are less ancient places so we need to preserve them.
In conclusion, although both viewpoints have merits but in this situation government needs to hire some people who can collect data about the conditions of the buildings and after that make decision which one needs to restored and replaced.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as economic growth through tourism for restoration and job creation for new buildings. However, the development is somewhat limited; the arguments are stated rather than fully extended with specific examples or deeper analysis. For instance, the mention of 'economic growth' is a good start, but it could be supported by a concrete example of a city that successfully preserved its heritage. The position is consistent throughout, though the conclusion introduces a new, slightly off-topic suggestion about hiring people to assess buildings rather than summarizing the main arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'although both viewpoints have merits but in this situation'. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, which helps the overall structure of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'renovating', 'bolster', 'infrastructure', and 'imperative'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'in quest of employment' (should be 'in search of') and 'enriching for the country revenue' (should be 'increasing national revenue'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the government', 'the cities'), subject-verb agreement ('old buildings needs'), and sentence construction ('whether government should restore... but other contenders believe'). Some sentences are slightly disjointed due to these errors. While the student attempts complex structures, the control over them is inconsistent. The errors rarely impede communication, but they are frequent enough to be noticeable throughout the text.
