Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is often a subject of debate on whether old buildings should be renovated or reconstructed. Some argue that old monuments such as town halls and museums should be restored despite being costly. Others believe that the government should build a modern building replacing the old ones. This essay will discuss both views and include why I believe a balanced approach is necessary.

On the one hand, old buildings carry a piece of our history. Those places carry many past events that has a significant role in our society. Heritage sites like museum and palaces preserve our culture and traditions that are directly related to our identity. Therefore, conserving those sites is very crucial even though they are relatively expensive. For instance, many old buildings in Kathmandu, Nepal are listed in world's cultural heritage and hence, conserved.

On the other hand, aged buildings become weak structurally overtime and poses serious threats to human life. Replacing them becomes the only solution to mitigate the accidents it may bring. Construction of new building provides a sense of security and may use for longer period of time. For example, Despite historical importance, an old school building named durbar high school, Nepal was replaced by a new building to avoid risk from falling.

In my view, it is important to preserve our history by restoring wherever possible, while replacing with new building with similar design structure to those weak foundation become crucial.

In conclusion, primitive buildings should be restored as they have historical importance however, it becomes evident to replace it with new building if it poses serious threats to human life. Moreover, special consideration can be given for architectures and sculpture of the new buildings.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the cultural importance of heritage sites versus the safety concerns of aging structures. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, the argument regarding 'modern buildings' could be further extended by discussing the economic benefits or environmental efficiency of new construction. The position is consistent throughout, but the conclusion could be more robust to fully synthesize the arguments presented. Overall, the response meets the requirements of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there is occasional awkwardness in the flow between sentences, such as the transition into the example about the school in Nepal. Referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in the use of linking words would enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some topic-specific terms like 'renovated,' 'reconstructed,' 'heritage sites,' and 'mitigate.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'primitive buildings' (which usually refers to ancient or tribal structures rather than just old ones) and 'architectures' (which should be 'architecture'). The range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but to reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise and sophisticated vocabulary to express your ideas with greater nuance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('events that has' should be 'events that have'), article usage ('in world's cultural heritage' should be 'in the world's cultural heritage'), and pluralization errors ('museum and palaces' should be 'museums and palaces'). Additionally, there are some punctuation and phrasing issues, such as 'may use for longer period of time' which should be passive voice ('may be used'). These errors do not impede communication but occur frequently enough to limit the score.
