Student answer (Band 7.5)
Whether old architecture should be restored or not is a highly sparked debate topic. Although a large portion of society supports the idea of restoration of the ancient heritage, there are still a few who oppose it and favour the investments on new structures. From my standpoint, officials should manage their funds to allocate equal revenue on both old and new buildings which will not only preserve cultural heritage but also introduce advance and energy efficient buildings.
One of the major reasons behind the preservation of ancient architecture is their cultural and religious significance. Mostly old buildings are associated with cultural, traditional and historical aspects of a region or the community. Therefore, maintaining those is necessary to preserve the sense of identity and belonging of the residents with the places. To cite an example, Gurudwaras in Punjab state in India, are the heritage and history of Sikhism. Therefore, regular maintenance of these is required for the conservation of cultural and religious diversity.
On the contrary, establishment of modern structures plays a crucial role in the sustainable development of a nation. Since modern designs use energy efficient materials, these usually consume less resources which definitely leads the country towards the sustainable development. As a case in point, shopping malls are cost effective because of the less energy consumption. This is considered as a smart investment as they are a long running business which brings huge amount of revenue every year in the form of taxes.
Taking everything in account, I ultimately arrive at the conclusion that official income should be equally distributed on the restoration of old architecture and introduction of modern buildings to preserve the history and culture of a national as well as to achieve sustainable development, respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the mention of Gurudwaras in India and the economic benefits of modern shopping malls. However, the development of the arguments could be more detailed to reach a higher band. For instance, the discussion on 'sustainable development' is somewhat brief. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Therefore', 'On the contrary', and 'Taking everything in account' are used appropriately to link ideas. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two opposing viewpoints. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'cultural and religious significance', 'sustainable development', and 'energy efficient materials' are used correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'highly sparked debate topic' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'allocate equal revenue on' (should be 'allocate equal revenue to'). However, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication. The student attempts to use less common items, showing a good awareness of the required academic style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several error-free sentences, and the grammar is generally accurate. Some minor errors exist, such as 'favour the investments on' (should be 'investments in') and 'a national' (should be 'a nation'). Punctuation is generally correct, though there are occasional minor slips. The control of grammar is good, and the errors present do not cause any difficulty for the reader. The range of structures is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly.
