Student answer (Band 6.5)

I recent time, we can notice that many old building have been demolished and are being replaced by the modern buildings. Further, some individual believe that old buildings such as town halls and art galleries should be restored even though it is costly while on the other hand some people thinks this building should be replaced with modern buildings by the government. In my opinion, both view carry different feelings depending on individual perspective and which will be discussed in detailed in the upcoming paragraph.

Initially, some people are old fashioned and they relay on the old monumental architect and building. Furthermore, this place describe the heritage and culture of our ancestor from the past. For instance, Taj hotel in Mumbai was restored and refurnished instead of replacing with new building. As a result it shows a sign of its rich history.

However, some individual perspective carry different opinion as they believe modern building should be replaced in place of old buildings and art galleries. There can be only reason as people want to think and live according to the generation. For instance, people from modern generation tend to visit modern places such as bar, cafe, restaurant rather than going to the museum or any art galleries.

To recapitulate, some individuals believe that old buildings should be restored because it carries rich history and culture of a particular site. However, some believe that old buildings should be replaced with modern buildings as young and modern individual are more interested in modern things. In my opinion both views have different feelings depending on the individual perspective.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both views and provides an opinion, though the development is somewhat superficial. You have identified the two sides—preservation versus modernization—but the arguments lack depth. For instance, the point about modern generations preferring cafes over museums is a good start but is not fully explored or linked back to the broader societal impact. Your opinion is stated in the introduction and conclusion, but it remains neutral rather than taking a clear stance, which is a requirement of the prompt. To improve, ensure that each body paragraph provides a more detailed explanation and a concrete example that directly supports your main argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'However', and 'To recapitulate' to signal transitions. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'There can be only reason as people want to think'. The logical progression is present but could be smoother. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more naturally connected rather than relying on simple transition markers.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. You use some relevant terms like 'demolished', 'heritage', and 'monumental', but there are also instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'relay on' (rely on) and 'modern building should be replaced in place of'. The repetition of basic words like 'buildings' and 'modern' limits your score. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and collocations related to urban planning and architecture, and pay closer attention to word forms and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'many old building have been', 'some individual believe') and article usage. While the meaning is generally clear, these errors are persistent throughout the text. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and pluralization. Additionally, try to incorporate more complex sentence structures, such as conditional sentences or relative clauses, while ensuring they are punctuated correctly to minimize errors.
