Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is considered that most of the individuals trust that ancient buildings, such as small towns and museum galleries, ought to be built, but this is too expensive. Another group thinks that higher authorities should construct new modern buildings. This essay will discuss both views, as I am in favour of the former notion.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which severely limits your ability to develop your ideas. While you have identified both sides of the argument and stated a clear position, the essay is incomplete and cuts off mid-sentence. The ideas presented, such as the connection to culture, are relevant but remain underdeveloped due to the lack of length. To improve, you must ensure you provide a full introduction, two well-supported body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The current response fails to address the prompt fully because it is unfinished.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay uses some basic cohesive devices like 'To commence with' and 'For example' to link ideas. However, because the text is incomplete, the overall progression is interrupted. Paragraphing is present, but the abrupt ending prevents a logical flow of the argument. To achieve a higher score, you should focus on using a wider range of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence followed by supporting evidence and a concluding thought.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for basic communication, but it lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. Phrases like 'most of the individuals trust' and 'higher authorities' are somewhat unnatural in this context. There are also minor errors, such as 'goverment' (spelling) and 'invest on' (preposition error). To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to architecture, heritage, and urban development, and focus on accurate collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The sentence structures are relatively simple, and there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For instance, 'It is considered that most of the individuals trust' is wordy and awkward, and 'ought to be built' does not accurately convey the meaning of 'restored'. There are also issues with article usage and verb agreement. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of complex sentence structures and the presence of frequent errors limit your score. Focus on mastering basic sentence patterns before attempting more complex ones.
