Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some individuals believe that ancient buildings such as city halls and art museums, should be repaired, even if it is expensive. Others disagree that the government should renovate them with recent buildings. This essay will discuss both perspective before explaining why I believe that old building such as town halls and art galleries should be restored.
Some people believe that restoring old buildings even though it's expensive gives respect to the older generations and also help in preserving cultural heritage. For example, Ojukwu bunker, it is an underground tunnel which he built to seek refuge during the Nigerian-Biafran war in 1957. The building is still preserved as it was then and people now visit it for tours. In addition, it can be used to attract tourists especially foreigners to visit and learn the history of the country. For instance, Olumo rock, which is located in Ogun state is now a tourist site. There is a tour guide that explains how it came about.
On the other hand, others believe that the government should replace them with new and modern buildings because some of the products used are not in existence and are hard to purchase so changing it entirely is the best. For illustrate that, the windows used in obafemi art galleries have stopped been produced a long time ago so it difficult to get. Futhermore, new structures makes it lively and colourful unlike the dull pattern used in the olden days.
In conclusion, I believe old building such as town halls and art galleries should be restored because it is a preserve cultural heritage and tourist attraction.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of cultural heritage and the practical difficulties of sourcing old materials. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The second body paragraph is less developed than the first, and the conclusion is quite brief, failing to fully summarise the main points discussed. While the position is clear, the supporting arguments could be expanded with more depth to reach a higher band. The essay meets the requirements of the task but remains somewhat superficial in its analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, each with a central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In addition', 'On the other hand', and 'For instance', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'For illustrate that'. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. While the overall progression is logical, the use of cohesive devices is not always flexible or natural, which limits the score to a 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'cultural heritage', 'renovate', and 'tourist attraction'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'recent buildings' instead of 'modern buildings' and 'products used' instead of 'materials'. Some phrasing is repetitive, and the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, which prevents a higher score. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to be noticeable.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('new structures makes it lively') and verb tense/form ('stopped been produced'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors throughout. The control over complex structures is inconsistent, and the frequency of errors, while not impeding communication, is significant enough to keep the score at a 5.5. More attention to proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would improve the score.
