Student answer (Band 6.5)

Historical monuments and galleries usually are not architecturally appealing. Some fraction of population supports the idea of them being replaced with new buildings. I disagree with this because I believe that these old buildings if renovated properly, can bring educational and tourist value.

Old buildings are evidence of the history which is very valuable to students and some researchers. The museums and art galleries have valuable remains of objects from past that helps researchers to trail back to the time when the objects belongs. To illustrate, Ajanta Caves in India has cave paintings which are estimated to be done thousands of years ago. We can now decipher the symbols and understand the lifestyles of people who used to live during that time.

Another reason to invest into restoration of the old buildings is that it attracts tourism to the city. For instance, the old Hollywood Art theatre in Behllingam was built in 1960s. The government renovated it while keeping the interior the same. Now, it has become most popular weekend spot of the city. Indiviaduals from different places come here to experience vintage interior and artistic performances.

In contrast, maintaining these old monuments might be costly. The land can be use for more crucial activities like residency or commercial complex. These new modern buildings can be beneficial for local communities as it can be served as common hall or park for childern.

Hence, if the old monuments are carefully maintained and advertised then it can boost the city's economy by tourism. The government should carefully calculate the potential of the buildings and decide how to invest the money.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout the essay. Ideas are generally well-developed, such as the educational value of historical sites and the economic benefits of tourism. However, the development of the opposing view regarding modern buildings is somewhat brief and could have been expanded with more specific examples or deeper analysis. Overall, the response effectively communicates the arguments, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0 level of task response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'To illustrate', 'Another reason', and 'In contrast', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the vague use of 'them' in the opening sentence. Despite these minor flaws, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. The student uses some topic-specific terms like 'architecturally appealing', 'renovated', and 'vintage interior'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'Some fraction of population' (should be 'A fraction of the population') and 'trail back' (should be 'trace back'). Additionally, there are a few spelling errors like 'childern' and 'Indiviaduals'. While the range is sufficient to convey meaning, the lack of precision in some areas prevents a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the' missing before 'history', 'the' missing before 'past') and subject-verb agreement ('objects belongs' instead of 'objects belong'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some awkward phrasings that slightly disrupt the flow. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to limit the score to a 6.0.
