Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is widely debated that old building must be restored despite of their expensive costs, others argue that modern buildings should be constructed on their places. This essay will discuss both these views before presenting my own perception.

For the former view, the primary reason to renovate old buildings like as town halls and art galleries is that it represents the heritage of the local culture. By restoring these places, government can use them as tourist spots which will facilitate in the economic growth. Although they require considerable amount of funding, this can be easily neutralized by the opportunities it will provide to the state such as educational tours by school students and so on. Consequently, these monuments will become famous because of their unique architecture.

For the latter view, undoubtedly replacing old building with the new ones will not only be economically beneficial but will be easy to operate with modern technology. The old buildings are outdated which does not comply with the safety standards of modern society. By constructing new buildings, engineers can provide more opportunities the development of the city. For instance, building multi-storey complex can bring a plenty of options for business, education and health care. This will not only bring better facilities to the locals but also will provide employment opportunities for the future generations. Ultimately, people will have scope for professional work within their community.

In conclusion, even though restoring cost is high for old monuments there positive results in the future will overcome it. Considering modern architecture over the ancient one seems more realistic in terms of future sustainability. In my opinion, the government should invest accordingly by investigating places from the professionals. They can provide a better understanding either about restoration of some buildings or completely replacing them with the new ones.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. The ideas are relevant, such as the cultural value of restoration versus the economic and safety benefits of new construction. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument regarding 'safety standards' is mentioned but not explained in detail. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your examples with more specific details or logical consequences. Your position is consistent throughout the essay, which is a strength.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into four paragraphs, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'For the former view,' 'For the latter view,' and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'there positive results' (should be 'their') and 'investigating places from the professionals.' Improving the flow between sentences within paragraphs would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'renovate,' 'heritage,' 'sustainability,' and 'monuments.' There are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'despite of their expensive costs' (should be 'despite their high costs') and 'investigating places from the professionals' (which is awkward phrasing). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on collocations and more natural phrasing will help improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you demonstrate an ability to construct complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'old building must be restored' (should be plural 'buildings'), 'like as' (should be 'such as'), and 'there positive results' (should be 'their'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but some errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage persist. These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
