IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored, even though this can be costly. Others argue that governments should replace them with new, modern buildings.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is a debatable issue that historical building like as town halls and art galleries ought to be preserved by authorities or it should be knocked down by constructing sophisticated building. Although modern buildings are good to construct but I think state should also look after heritage buildings. In this essay, I will discuss both the views along with my own opinion.

On the first hand, there are numerous reasons to stand by former view of few people. Firstly, vintage structures are the only way to teach the upcoming generations about past. For example, Toronto has a gallery which is named as art gallery of Ontario. Whenever any international students or tourists visit to this place ,they get amused and get valuable information about Ontario. As a result, it works as bridge to connects two culture together. Secondly, Vanishing the old buildings mean hurting the sentiments of elder people. Because these are the places where they prefer to spend their weekends and feel their previous time.

On the other hand, supporting to the latter view of others folks. It is appropriate to build contemporary building as it would make the city more up to date and developed. To instance, CN Tower which is the most famous structure and it represents to the Toronto City and signify the development of the area. Lastly, installing high- tech building can become good source of revenue such as Rogers stadium. As a reason, number of concerts which are held by celebrities they do booking by paying in millions of dollars. As a result, this amount can be used by public organization for the betterment of local people.

In my opinion, I think government should care about traditional building since these monuments reflects the existence of past famous models. To explain it, one of the famous painting which is known as The jack pine painted by Tom Thomson in 1916. This painting is still present in art gallery which motivates to the fresh face.

In conclusion, local authority should should build cutting-edge structures but they should also show concern to protect historical buildings as well.
