Student answer (Band 6.0)

Even though Historical Buildings are not very cost effective to maintain, some people have their whole heart on them and would never want it to be taken down. On the other hand, a few argue that they should be rebuilt into something useful.

Ancient structures like art galleries, museums, monuments etc, they preserve something very beautiful because of the meaningful histories they have in them. And we need these in order to carry forward the history and culture of that place to the new generations. They are also a huge source of income as it attracts people from other towns to visit. For example, In Agra India, we have the Taj Mahal which is considered one of the most ancient structures and it signifies love because it was build by an emperor for his late wife. It is an amazing tourist spot and is also considered a very calming place for families to sit and adore the beauty of it.

In contrast, some believe that these are just a waste of land and money and they should be replaced by something new and useful. For instance, old town halls that are not being used for years should be renovated or rebuilt into a recreational spot for the community to use. Moreover, other ancient plazas that are not worth spending a lot of money because they have not very useful to the neighbourhood, should be converted to modern buildings that the people want.

In conclusion, i believe that some historical buildings that have meaningful beliefs are necessary for the town's growth and they should not be restored. It also helps keep the culture alive in the upcoming generation. On the other hand, it is also important to replace old buildings that are not useful into something meaningful for the community as they are the one paying taxes and they should have the right to decide how that money is spent.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the cultural value of historical sites versus the practical need for modern infrastructure. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The argument for restoration is well-supported with the Taj Mahal example, but the counter-argument regarding replacing buildings is slightly repetitive. Additionally, there is a contradiction in the conclusion where you state buildings 'should not be restored' despite arguing for their preservation earlier in the essay. This inconsistency impacts the clarity of your position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices like 'On the other hand,' 'In contrast,' and 'Moreover' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of referencing is occasionally imprecise. For example, the transition between the introduction and the first body paragraph could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the logical progression within the conclusion is weakened by the contradictory statement mentioned in the task achievement section.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'renovated,' 'recreational spot,' and 'ancient structures.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'have their whole heart on them' and 'not very useful to the neighbourhood.' There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'build' instead of 'built.' To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('they have not very useful') and tense inconsistencies. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some errors with comma usage and capitalization. The errors do not typically impede communication, but they are noticeable throughout the text. To improve, focus on ensuring consistent verb tenses and refining your control over complex sentence structures to reduce the frequency of these minor errors.
