Student answer (Band 6.0)

Few people believe that old buildings which hold history and importance should be restored like art galleries and town halls even though it is costly. while others think that they should replace them with new establishments. I believe with the former statement.

It is very hard to maintain and organize the old buildings in the modern world. But with funds from the local government and with their support it becomes easy. This should be done in order to keep the history of the places alive. For example, India Gate, back in India is constantly being restored on a regular basis because it shows the importance of the country and its history. It shows that what India had suffered back in the old times. By preserving these old buildings, it will keep the place alive by attracting new visitors everyday and also highlights the value of that particular place. These buildings are the reason why the countries and certain cities all around the world are famous.

Even though maintaining old structures is good , new development should be done in their place as well. In this developing time, old establishments should also be upgraded too. This will help by saving money which is required in the restoration and in its maintenance. Not only this, but it will help people to easily adapt to new technology a building needs in this fast growing world. For instance making a completely new town hall in Vancouver is more attractive and sensible rather than investing in the same old place.

In conclusion, even though things should change in accordance to the new times, I believe the heritage of old buildings should be kept rather than replacing them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the argument for restoration is supported by the example of the India Gate, the counter-argument regarding new buildings is less effectively developed. The reasoning for replacing buildings—such as 'saving money' and 'adapting to new technology'—is presented but lacks depth. The introduction is slightly confusing, as the opening sentence suggests that 'few people' believe in restoration, which contradicts the prompt's premise. To reach a higher band, ensure that the introduction accurately reflects the prompt and that both sides of the argument are explored with equal depth and logical progression.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'For example', 'Even though', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, the transition between the introduction and the first body paragraph is abrupt, and some linking phrases feel a bit mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be improved to create a more natural progression of ideas. The essay maintains a consistent focus on the topic throughout, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'establishments' and 'restoration', but the range is somewhat limited. Some word choices are slightly imprecise, such as 'In this developing time' or 'making a completely new town hall'. There are no significant spelling errors, and the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without causing difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student should aim to incorporate more topic-specific collocations and varied synonyms to demonstrate a wider lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'It shows that what India had suffered' (unnecessary 'that'), 'restored on a regular basis' (redundant), and 'new development should be done' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is mostly functional, though there are some minor issues with comma placement. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring greater accuracy in subject-verb agreement and preposition usage would be beneficial.
