Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, ancient buildings have become a debatable topic in our society. Some people believe that the government should take care of old buildings while others think that it should be replaced with new buildings. In this essay, i will discuss both points of view and give my opinion.

On the one hand, certain people think that it is the government's responsibility to restore the town halls, old museums and art galleries because these buildings hold and represent our rich culture. Moreover, children can explore our heritage by viewing them. For instance, schools can organize the trips for art galleries which can enhance children's knowledge. Furthermore, it can attract tourists which can lead to the economic growth of the country.

On the other hand, others believe in constructing modern buildings. Firstly, if the government builds new offices and buildings instead of restoring the old ones then it can be beneficial for both cities and people. For example, land can be used for commercial businesses and fun activities. People can get a benefit by investing in small businesses and cities will look more modern. In addition, malls can be built rather than keeping the old buildings this can also help to enhance cities development and govt can still provide the same experience in the malls by creating separate area for storing the old arts.

In conclusion, I believe that the government should conserve the old buildings even if they need to spend more on it as it shows our rich heritage to our future generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention economic growth and heritage, the arguments could be extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis. For instance, the point about 'malls' as a replacement for old buildings is a relevant idea, but it lacks a strong counter-argument or deeper exploration of the cultural loss involved. To reach a higher band, ensure that each body paragraph fully explores the implications of the arguments presented rather than just listing them.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. While the progression is generally clear, the transition between ideas within paragraphs could be smoother. Sometimes the sentences feel a bit disconnected. To improve, try to use a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensure that the relationship between sentences is always explicit to guide the reader through your argument more effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'debatable', 'responsibility', 'heritage', and 'commercial businesses'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive and lacks the sophistication required for higher bands. There are minor issues with word choice, such as 'take care of' (which could be 'preserve' or 'maintain') and 'get a benefit' (which could be 'derive benefits'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and less common lexical items that are appropriate for an academic discussion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'it should be replaced' (should be 'they should be replaced' to agree with 'buildings'), 'organize the trips' (should be 'organize trips'), and 'govt' (avoid abbreviations in formal writing). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are some minor slips. To achieve a higher score, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that you use formal register throughout the essay by avoiding abbreviations.
