Student answer (Band 7.0)

Some individuals think that traditional monuments such as town halls and art galleries should be repaired despite the fact that it could cost a fortune. However, other section of the society is of the mindset that rather than restoring such buildings, authorities should consider replacing them with new constructions. I believe preserving the old buildings is the need of the hour because they are part of our cultural heritage.

To commence with, the primary catalyst behind the notion of restoring old buildings is their connection to the local cultural roots. Since they represent the connectivity to old traditional cultural heritage, preserving them by doing the necessary restoration is not wasteful. It is the cost to stay connected to our roots. Furthermore, some traditional buildings are the famous landmarks of a region, which means demolishing them would result in loss of tourism it brings to that place, which would consequently lead to reduction in tourism revenue. To exemplify, a century old museum building should be restored instead of getting demolished, owing to its rich historical value that attracts travelers.

On the contrary, some critics argue that constructing new buildings is economically a better alternative to restoring classical monuments. The contributing factor is replacing them with new buildings would not only provide stronger architect that can last a lifetime but also equip modern buildings with latest technology. As a result, the premises can be made much more efficient for the public which would enhance the overall experience of the visitors.

In conclusion, although new constructions can last longer and offer more facilities, the enchanting charisma and cultural connectivity older buildings provide cannot be replaced by any new construction. Therefore, in my opinion, restoring traditional buildings where possible should be prioritized.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout the essay. Ideas are generally well-developed, such as the argument regarding cultural heritage and tourism revenue. However, the development of the opposing view could be slightly more nuanced; while you mention 'stronger architect' and 'latest technology,' these points could be expanded with more specific examples to reach a higher band. Overall, the response is focused and relevant, meeting the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with,' 'Furthermore,' 'On the contrary,' and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints. The flow between sentences is generally smooth, although some transitions could be more varied to enhance the sophistication of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'primary catalyst,' 'cultural roots,' and 'enchanting charisma' are used effectively. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'stronger architect' (which should refer to 'architecture' or 'structural integrity') and 'other section of the society' (which is slightly unnatural). Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is adequate to convey your meaning clearly and shows an attempt to use less common lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over grammar, and most sentences are error-free. However, there are occasional slips, such as 'a century old museum' (which should be 'a century-old museum') and 'the cost to stay connected' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally accurate, and the errors present do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional clauses or more sophisticated passive constructions.
