Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the modern era, there has been an ongoing debate about areas where government needs to pay attention. Some people believe that authorities would need to invest more on restoration of old famous infrastructure. However, significant number of people argue that government need to invest more on new buildings. This essay will discuss both perspectives, although I strongly believe that it is important to fix historical buildings.

On the one hand, who support the idea regarding maintenance of old buildings argues that these buildings are more more related to their culture and and traditional beliefs. This is because the art galleries and museum have so many things related to their ancestors and the buildings were also build with beautiful handcrafts on the walls and roofs. Consequently, if government would invest on these buildings, it will also attract tourists and it will cause positive impact on the country's economy.

On the other hand, those in favor of the latter opinion have their own arguments. To begin with, they claim that construction of new buildings cost less as compared to restorations. In other words, people believe that government should need to use sophisticated methods to design the new buildings and due to newly constructed infrastructure maintenance cost will be less. For example, cost of repairing old buildings is way too much as compared to new infrastructure.

In my opinion, both views have merits and some demerits. But restoration of historical buildings is more important. Because it is importance to keep the things which are related to the culture and heritage. Additionally, the design of these buildings are very beautiful and it is hard to build buildings like those.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that regular maintenance of old buildings is important to represent our culture to new generations. Furthermore, in art galleries significant number of photos and material available for any future research and which should be important for researches.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout the response. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, the argument regarding the cost-effectiveness of new buildings is mentioned but not fully explored with specific evidence or deeper analysis. The points regarding cultural heritage are relevant but could be extended with more concrete examples beyond general statements about 'ancestors' and 'handcrafts'. To reach a higher band, ensure that each main point is supported by a more detailed explanation or a specific, illustrative example.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, there are instances of mechanical or repetitive use of cohesive devices, such as the frequent repetition of 'and' and 'also'. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the phrase 'the latter opinion' which is used correctly but follows a somewhat clunky introduction. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the flow of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'infrastructure' and 'sophisticated', but the range is somewhat limited. Some word choices are imprecise or repetitive, such as 'fix' instead of 'restore' or 'conserve', and 'things' which is a very vague noun. There are also minor errors in collocation, such as 'cause positive impact' instead of 'have a positive impact'. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and avoiding overly simplistic phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('who support... argues'), article misuse ('the art galleries and museum'), and awkward phrasing ('government should need to use'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some errors in sentence construction, such as the sentence fragment in the conclusion starting with 'and which should be'. Increasing the accuracy of basic grammar and refining complex sentence structures will help improve this score.
