IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored, even though this can be costly. Others argue that governments should replace them with new, modern buildings.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Restoration of old monuments and heritage sites has frequently become a matter of concern nowadays and discussed a lot over all the platforms frankly. Comparably another viewpoint of replacement with new, modern and spacious buildings in relation to the increase in population and development holds equal importance. In my opinion old architecture should be preserved and conserved by the governments to teach the history and stories behind their construction to the upcoming generations. I shall discuss both the views in the forthcoming paragraphs.
Youth needs to be aware of the old heritage and architectural sites of their country which would in turn lead them to explore the brighter and darker aspects of those places. For instance, some children are interested in learning about such old traditional palaces, forts and museums and turn out to be great historians, thinkers or archaeologists, etc. Though it would be costly to restore them but it will lead us towards a brighter future if everyone contributes a small amount towards it.
If they are replaced with new constructions then tourists from all over the world would stop visiting our country and the people who have worked hard behind their construction and are selling beautiful souvenirs of those places will be left with nothing and their businesses would suffer. Though new buildings would provide employment to some people and expand the city but it would also lead to industrial and chemical pollution. For example, people throwing plastic, wastes affecting greenery, animals, etc. would augment difficulties in the city.
Recapitulating this I would say that if a proper balance between both the areas of interest is maintained keeping in mind the affirmative points of the people and the city both then the planet would be a happier place to live in .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion in the introduction. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The argument for restoration is supported by the educational value for youth, but the argument for replacement is less focused, shifting quickly to the economic impact on tourism and then to environmental concerns like 'plastic and wastes'. While the task is addressed, the ideas could be more deeply explored and better linked to the core debate of 'modernization versus preservation'. The conclusion is brief and lacks a summary of the main arguments, which limits the overall impact of the position.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'For instance', 'Though', and 'Recapitulating', but some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The flow between sentences is generally clear, though the connection between the economic argument and the environmental point in the third paragraph is abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints. To improve, ensure that each paragraph has a stronger internal structure where ideas flow smoothly from one to the next without sudden shifts in topic.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at more sophisticated language like 'archaeologists', 'souvenirs', and 'augment'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'discussed a lot over all the platforms frankly' and 'comparably another viewpoint'. The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band. To improve, focus on using collocations more accurately and avoiding overly informal or vague expressions in an academic context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Restoration... has frequently become a matter of concern... and discussed a lot' (passive voice inconsistency) and 'If they are replaced... then tourists... would stop' (conditional structure is acceptable, but the surrounding text is slightly clunky). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are minor issues with spacing and sentence construction. While the errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage would be beneficial.
