Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic benefits of tourism versus the opportunity cost of government spending. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The conclusion is incomplete, as it cuts off mid-sentence, which limits the overall impact of the argument. While the position is clear throughout, the final summary of the argument is not fully realised due to the abrupt ending. To improve, ensure that the conclusion provides a comprehensive synthesis of the points discussed rather than trailing off.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Admittedly', 'Furthermore', and 'On the other hand', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'spending it expenditure', which disrupts the logical progression. Additionally, the abrupt ending significantly impacts the coherence of the final paragraph. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that sentences connect more fluidly would enhance the overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas about heritage, economics, and government policy. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'imperative', 'indispensable', and 'inextricably linked'. However, there are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'spend it expenditure', 'taken granted', and 'balance approach' (should be 'balanced approach'). Some phrasing is slightly awkward, which occasionally hinders the precision of the argument. Expanding the range of vocabulary and focusing on correct collocations will help move the score higher.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the attempt at complex sentences is evident, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('old traditional buildings has', 'building acts', 'shops gets') and article usage. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with several misplaced commas and spacing issues. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable. To improve, the student should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, specifically ensuring that subjects and verbs agree and that articles are used correctly.
