Student answer (Band 6.0)

There are mix opinions among many people that whether the historical buildings should be replaced or not. Although restoring old buildings can be expensive sometimes, I believe that by investing money in making these buildings useful would be a better option because of their historical value.

On the on hand, there are many reasons why historical buildings should be restored. Firstly, These sites showcase the cultural and historical value of the place. Many people who visit these places can get knowledge about the value of the area. For example young students may learn better about the history by visiting these places which would otherwise be difficult for them just by reading books and watching documentaries. Secondly, Tourists are often attracted by well-preserved historical sites, which can generate significant economic benefits for the local community. For example, many European countries have restored old sites and now generating money from tourists.

On the other hand, restoring old buildings often require a lot of investment. Governments allocate a huge amount of money in restoring them which directly affects other projects like education, health and public safety. However, Modern buildings are designed with new features that can be effective in todays World.

In conclusion, although investing in new buildings could be an effective measure, I believe governments should restore the sites that are not in bad shape.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of the arguments. While the ideas regarding cultural value and economic benefits are relevant, they are not fully developed. The conclusion is also quite brief. To improve, you should expand on your examples and provide more detailed explanations for why modern buildings might be preferred, ensuring you meet the word count requirement to allow for a more comprehensive discussion of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'On the other hand' to link your points. However, the transitions between sentences could be more sophisticated to improve the flow. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid and less reliant on simple list-like structures.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the range and precision required for a higher score. You use common phrases like 'get knowledge' and 'making these buildings useful', which are functional but basic. There are also some minor errors in word choice, such as 'mix opinions' instead of 'mixed opinions'. To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to architecture, urban planning, and heritage conservation, such as 'architectural integrity', 'urban development', or 'preservation efforts'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally affect the clarity of your writing. For example, 'restoring old buildings often require' should be 'requires' (subject-verb agreement), and 'in todays World' is missing an apostrophe. There are also issues with capitalization, such as 'These' in the middle of a sentence. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to limit your score. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and punctuation errors.
