Student answer (Band 7.0)

A section of individuals supports the fact that the old town halls and art galleries should be preserved and restored, despite the high handling costs. Others believe that replacing them with modern buildings is a better use of government funds. This essay will discuss both opinions and explain why I am in favor of restoring historical places.

On one hand, old buildings reflect the culture and values. They can represent the historic concepts to future generations which could be easier for them to understand. For instance, students who study history and art can gain deep learning from art galleries and historical places and use such knowledge in their future learning and career. Additionally, the destruction of such places to build modern, designed buildings needs construction approvals and a large amount of material which will take several years to construct them.

On the other hand, replacing old buildings to build new ones has its own benefits. One is that the new building will be designed and constructed with modern technology. There should be careful consideration of safety standards and provide easy access to disabled people. Moreover, maintaining the old constructed halls and galleries is expensive as they require regular inspections and repairs.

However,I believe that restoring old buildings is a meaningful approach. The funds used to construct new buildings and demolish the old ones can be used for other issues such as public health care and education. Moreover, old buildings can attract tourists to explore the specialties of the town which helps to generate income by helping domestic businesses and creating employment.Hence improve economy and bring world's attention to the town.

Overall, although modren buildings are more convenient and practical, the old building structures should be prioritised for restoring as these buildings are the beauty of attraction and holds historical and cultural values. The government should utilze the earned money from torism for protection and repair.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout the essay. Ideas are generally well-developed, such as the argument regarding tourism and economic benefits. However, some points could be extended further; for example, the mention of 'modern technology' and 'safety standards' in the second body paragraph is a bit brief. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of the task effectively, providing a balanced discussion followed by a clear stance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On one hand,' 'On the other hand,' 'However,' and 'Moreover' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. Referencing is clear, and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task, allowing for some flexibility and precision. You use relevant terms like 'preserved,' 'restored,' 'demolish,' and 'economic benefits.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'a section of individuals' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'beauty of attraction' (which is non-standard). However, these do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, but there are occasional errors, such as 'Hence improve economy' (missing subject) and 'holds historical and cultural values' (subject-verb agreement error, as 'buildings' is plural). Punctuation is generally correct, though there is a missing space after the comma in 'However,I'. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammatical control is sufficient for a band 6.5 level.
