Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent times where so many people feel, it is not worthy to spend money on old buildings be it town halls or art galleries instead of it should be replaced with new modern buildings. However, others are still arguing that in order to keep our heritage and history alive the government should restore the old buildings at any cost. I personally feel just to keep our heritage and history alive the money should be spent to reform the old buildings.

On the one hand side, the prominent reason to replace the old buildings with the new one could be the value of money. To elaborate, when the legal authorities spend money on the new buildings, it justifies the value of money that has been put it into it. Also, when the new buildings are built, it comes with modern technologies, such as elevator, fire system, underground parking and more. The second reason could be the lifespan. To delineate, when the government spends money on the construction of the new buildings, it gives the kind of garunty that it probably last for another 30-35 years at least because it is made from scratch. Also, the government might not need to spend more money in its maintenance as well.

On the other hand, people also feel that in order to keep our heritage alive the government should spend money on the maintenance of the old buildings. I believe that old buildings are an integral part of our history and society. Moreover, town halls and art galleries are the places where actually children and youth go and learn about our history because these places are etched with historical events. Thus, in order to maintain the buildings and educate the people I feel it is worth spending the money. The second reason could be prompting the tourism. To describe, there are many places across the world where people only go to visit the old historical buildings. So, if the government spends extra little money on it, it may eventually come back when tourist coming and paying to visit such places. For an instance, pyramids in Egypt.

To wrap up, yes, in order to make the value for money, it is a good idea to build the new buildings. However, I still believe the government should spend money on old buildings to keep heritage alive.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, such as the mention of modern technology in new buildings and the role of historical sites in education and tourism. However, the development is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing, such as 'value of money' used to describe the efficiency of new construction, which is slightly imprecise. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, ensure that arguments are more precisely articulated and that the link between the 'value of money' and the replacement of buildings is explained with greater clarity.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. The use of cohesive devices like 'On the one hand side', 'To elaborate', and 'To wrap up' helps guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the phrase 'instead of it should be replaced' in the introduction, which lacks a clear antecedent. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and there is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Improving the variety and naturalness of linking phrases would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'integral', 'delineate', and 'etched', though some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'garunty' (spelling error) and 'value of money' used in a non-standard way. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'reform' instead of 'restore' or 'renovate'. While the range is sufficient to convey meaning, the lack of precision in some areas prevents a higher score. Focusing on accurate collocations and refining word choice will improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the pyramids'), subject-verb agreement ('tourist coming'), and sentence fragments or awkward syntax ('In recent times where so many people feel, it is not worthy...'). Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are clunky. Despite these errors, the meaning is rarely obscured, and the reader can follow the argument without difficulty. To improve, the writer should focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for common errors like missing articles and incorrect verb forms.
