Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both views and provides a personal opinion, meeting the basic requirements of the prompt. However, the development of ideas is limited. The arguments regarding the preservation of culture and the desire for modern infrastructure are somewhat repetitive and lack depth. For instance, the explanation of why modern buildings are preferred is vague and relies on a personal anecdote that does not fully support the broader argument about urban development. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific, well-reasoned justifications for both sides and ensure your own opinion is clearly articulated and consistently supported throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the flow between and within them is often mechanical. While transition words like 'To commence with' and 'On the other side' are used, they are sometimes used incorrectly or feel forced. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'While keep that with that older look', which makes the connection between ideas difficult to follow. The conclusion is also abrupt and lacks a clear transition from the body paragraphs. Improving the use of cohesive devices and ensuring that each sentence logically follows the previous one will significantly enhance the readability of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive, relying on basic terms like 'things', 'look', and 'old'. There are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'few informative things' and 'converted into new look'. The phrasing 'old culture things' is imprecise and lacks the sophistication expected at higher levels. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of variety and the frequent misuse of vocabulary restrict the score. You should focus on learning topic-specific collocations related to architecture and urban planning to express your ideas with greater precision and naturalness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains a high frequency of grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are frequent issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'Old structures are shows' and 'old buildings and art galleries is'. Additionally, sentence structures are often fragmented or incorrectly constructed, such as 'modern buildings are give the new look'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary spaces before commas. While there is an attempt to use complex sentences, these are often inaccurate. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and subject-verb agreement before attempting more complex structures.
