Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is an undeniable fact that buildings play a paramount role reflecting history. Buildings such as art galleries, town halls shows the true identity of the city. Some people support the fact that it needs the restoration with the time, regardless of cost, while others think that its place should be taken by the modern architecture. According to my perspective, preserving past is necessary because; otherwise, how the future generation will know about it. In below paragraphs I would like to put forth my views with valid opinions in the conclusion.

To begin with, ancient architecture teaches us about the past. For instance; forts, palaces represents how rich and wealthy a civilization was. Because of its components, over the time it might need some fixtures and it definitely costs much more in today's time as the same components might be rare. Moreover, these ancient buildings can be useful to generate revenue by attracting the tourists. Additionally, history is always going to be a part of future and we cannot replace it. Last but not the least, these architecture also represents the sacrifice done by the country's ancestors.

However, we seldom give a thought to ponder over the other side of story. Foremostly, it is not always possible to maintain because of the economical situation of the nation. There are some other issues which needs more attention. For example, poverty and unemployment. When a nation is standing strong on such root issues then only the revenues could be spent on things like architecture. Later on, contemporary architecture is also an eye-catching topic. If there is no modern architecture in city then it will not seem a developed one. Lastly, as the environment has changed since back, we need some building which can stay strong as per the current situation.

The seemingly inexorable debate about buildings and architecture can keep on going. Nevertheless, showing deep reverence for all aspects and observing a finer nuance of the matter mentioned above, I espouse the notion of supporting the fact that replacing the whole monument or architecture of the city could not be possible. It needs a practical solution like developing the new architecture in underdeveloped or non developed areas. Whereas, the ancient buildings should only be fixed when it is essential for it.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the cultural value of historical buildings versus the economic necessity of modern infrastructure. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat uneven. While the arguments for restoration are well-supported, the counter-arguments regarding poverty and unemployment are introduced but not fully integrated into the overall discussion. The conclusion is a bit vague, suggesting a compromise that was not clearly articulated in the body paragraphs. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully extended with specific, logical reasoning throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'However', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced, such as 'Last but not the least' and 'In below paragraphs I would like to put forth my views'. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the final paragraph where the connection between the 'practical solution' and the previous arguments could be more explicit. Overall, the progression of ideas is coherent, but the flow could be smoother.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'paramount', 'inexorable', and 'reverence'. There are some attempts to use less common lexical items, though some are used slightly inaccurately, such as 'fixtures' (which usually refers to plumbing or furniture) instead of 'restoration' or 'repairs'. There are also minor collocation issues, such as 'economical situation' (should be 'economic situation'). Despite these minor errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly, and the student shows a good attempt at using a more academic tone throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Buildings... shows', 'these architecture also represents') and punctuation errors (the semicolon usage in 'necessary because; otherwise'). While these errors are frequent, they do not impede communication. The student attempts complex structures, but control is inconsistent. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of plural/singular nouns, as well as refining punctuation to ensure that complex sentences are grammatically sound and clearly structured.
