Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that old buildings like art galleries or town halls should be preserved, in spite of their cost, whereas some people are against and thinks these building should be replaced with new modern style buildings. Ancient buildings are preserving historical values and signs of old generations as well as main attraction for tourists, however these days all over the world inflations and populations is increasing with each passing day so authorities does not have enough funds and space for offices, hotels, supermarkets. So, I think these building should be demolished by considering the today's demands.

Old buildings are best example to show to future generations the art and culture of old people, which could play a critical to know about their culture. Apart from this, for any city these buildings are major attractions and big source of income. So, without them those city does not have anything special. Taking Agra (India) as an example, this city is famous due to Taj Mahal, which is almost 100 years old. If government demolishes it then it loose not only its attraction but also big source of income and unemployment rale will also surge up.

On the other hand, these days most of the cities struggling with problems like over-population, inflation. Therefore, governing bodies does not have any other option rather than replacing these old building with new ones. This era is changing and growing rapidly, therefore for new office, universities, hotels government need space, so these buildings are solely option for them. Also, many of the building are threat and can fell down any time and their cost are in billion dollars. For instance, UK's renowned city Edinburgh declared bankrupt in 2023, this city does not have funds to take care of city's old forts and city halls.

In conclusion, it is clear that managing old building these days is not easy task for government as such when they have obstacles like over population and inflation, thus these buildings should be replaced with new ones.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat inconsistent. While the argument for preservation is supported by the example of the Taj Mahal, the argument for demolition relies on generalizations about inflation and population that are not fully explored. The example of Edinburgh being declared bankrupt in 2023 is factually inaccurate, which weakens the persuasiveness of the argument. To reach a higher band, ensure that examples are accurate and that the reasoning links more logically to the specific prompt regarding town halls and art galleries rather than general urban planning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Apart from this,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical, and the flow between sentences is occasionally hindered by grammatical errors. For instance, the transition between the discussion of historical value and the economic argument in the second paragraph could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the internal structure of the paragraphs would benefit from more sophisticated linking words to improve the overall progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'old people' instead of 'previous generations' or 'ancestors,' and 'unemployment rale' (a spelling error). The student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'demolished' and 'preserved,' but the range is limited. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive or overly simplistic language, such as 'big source of income' or 'not easy task.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('populations is increasing,' 'authorities does not have,' 'these building are'), article usage, and pluralization ('these building should be demolished'). While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. The student should focus on proofreading for basic agreement and tense consistency, as well as practicing more complex sentence structures to demonstrate greater control over grammar.
