Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that governments should allocate a budget to preserving historical buildings, despite the high cost to maintain them. While others argued that state should construct modern apartments instead of spending money on old buildings. In my opinion, preserving historical sites is essential because it contributes to a country's economic growth and promote tourism.

On the one hand, Preserving historical buildings is important because they reflect a nation's cultural heritage and can attract tourists, thereby generating revenue and creating employment opportunities for local communities. For example, restoring an old fort or historic palace can turn it into a popular tourist attraction, benefiting nearby hotels, restaurants, and shops. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both views and provides a clear opinion. However, the essay is under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of development. While the arguments regarding economic growth and housing needs are relevant, they are somewhat underdeveloped due to the brevity of the response. The conclusion is also abrupt and incomplete, failing to fully synthesize the arguments presented. To improve, you should expand on your examples and ensure that your conclusion provides a more comprehensive summary of your position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand' and 'Furthermore' to signal shifts in the argument. However, the cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and the final paragraph is incomplete, which disrupts the overall flow. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a strong, complete concluding sentence that ties back to the main argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'cultural heritage,' 'economic growth,' and 'employment opportunities.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'replace these historical places in to new high rise building' and 'demolish than.' To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and pay closer attention to preposition usage and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'it also help to educate') and article usage (e.g., 'due to increasing population'). Some sentences are also fragmented or incomplete, such as the final sentence of the third paragraph. Increasing your control over complex structures and proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy will help you achieve a higher score.
