IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored, even though this can be costly. Others argue that governments should replace them with new, modern buildings.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In this contemporary era, there is an ongoing debate among people on whether the old buildings should be demolished and build new ones on their place or those should be repaired and restored. I am in a favor of new construction over restructuring old ones with some limitation.
On the one hand, demolition of older constructions in the residential areas will provide space to build some new structures. This could not only help citizens to get some new amenities and facilities in their area but will also provide security from unpredicted accidents of falling of old buildings structures. For example, in the place of 10 year old town hall we can build a public library so residents can utilize it. Which can also be used to hold meetings and events in the future. Building modern buildings will also allow people to get an opportunity to expend tourism by having unique places for visitors to see.
On the other hand, restoration of older architecture is essential for the preservation of local culture and heritage. These facilities might be a source of income for some people for years which could lead to unemployment. Reconstruction and repair of these might cost a little out of budget but it will save the history and identity of the area. For instance, some areas of cities and villages are known only by their old architecture rather than modern skyscrapers.
To conclude, I believe that people should come up with the solution on demolishing the non-restorable building and replacing them with new ones. While those which are still in working conditions could be restored for public use

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding 'unpredicted accidents' is a valid point, but the example of a '10-year-old town hall' is weak, as 10 years is not typically considered an old building worthy of historical preservation. The conclusion introduces a nuanced position that was not fully explored in the body paragraphs, which slightly affects the overall coherence of the argument. To reach a higher band, ensure that examples are more realistic and that the supporting arguments are more thoroughly explained.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, there are some issues with referencing and sentence flow. For example, the sentence 'Which can also be used to hold meetings...' is a sentence fragment that disrupts the flow. Additionally, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, but the mechanical use of some cohesive devices and minor errors in sentence structure prevent a higher score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at topic-specific language like 'demolition', 'restoration', 'architecture', and 'modern skyscrapers'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'expend tourism' should be 'expand tourism', and 'in a favor of' should be 'in favor of'. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Using more varied synonyms for 'buildings' or 'restoring' would improve the lexical quality.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'build new ones on their place' (should be 'in their place'), 'unpredicted accidents of falling of old buildings structures' (awkward phrasing), and 'the solution on demolishing' (should be 'the solution to demolishing'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence fragments and minor errors in articles and prepositions persist throughout the text. The grammar is sufficient for communication but lacks the consistent accuracy needed for a higher band.
