Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many persons argues that although ancient monuments, such as city halls and art centers are expensive to maintain, whilst opponents want to make new contemporary constructions by replacing these. Old buildings retain architecture and history whereas modern establishments create more job opportunities. I believe that old building should be restored as it preserved the aesthetic beauty of past years.

On the one hand, regardless of costlier maintenance, old premises such as art galleries and town halls should be refurbished as it depicts the great architecture of past years. Moreover, art museums protect the various art styles, patterns and antiques which are a visual descriptions of old culture and traditions. Hence, young generations can attain knowledge about it and will pass this information to their next generation by visiting such unique places. For example, Sikh Museum at Anandpur Sahib of Punjab, India, is very popular as it preserves the heritage, history and culture of Sikh Gurus.

On the other side, many individuals argue that such old buildings should be replaced by new and modern structures. Instead of spending money to restore it , government should invest these funds to make shopping malls, factories, clubs, theme parks, cafes and many more. Such buildings would provide more career options. As a result, economic potential of the nation will be increased.

In conclusion, however, new building provide extra career profiles but old buildings preserve history and culture, so I personally believe to promote these great places.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the essay is under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of development. While the arguments for restoration and replacement are relevant, they are somewhat brief. The conclusion is also quite abrupt. To reach a higher band, you need to expand your supporting points with more detailed analysis and ensure you meet the minimum word count requirement to fully develop your ideas as expected in an IELTS Task 2 essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each view, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical, and the transition between the second body paragraph and the conclusion feels abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between ideas would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'refurbished', 'aesthetic beauty', and 'economic potential'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'Many persons argues' (should be 'people argue') and 'make new contemporary constructions' (a more natural collocation would be 'construct modern buildings'). The vocabulary is generally sufficient to convey your meaning, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Expanding your repertoire of academic collocations would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Many persons argues') and incorrect pronoun usage ('restore it' referring to plural 'buildings'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in sentence construction. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent pluralization will help improve your accuracy.
