Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people argue that old historical buildings such as art galleries and town halls ought to be restored despite of costly renovation charges, while others believe that the authorities should replace them with new modern buildings. I largely support to the former opinion. However, I will examine both the views and give my opinion in this essay.

First and foremost, one of the most significant factor why we should protect these buildings is that because these art galleries and historical places are the heritage of the country. They allow us to learn about the history, indigenous people and their ways to living lives. Moreover, any country is known for its history, languages, people, historical landscapes and art. Although restoring these places require substantial cost, but it is our obligation and prestige to preserve these inherited places.

On the other hand, it is indeed true that world is changing rapidly and technology is infiltrated in every corner of the world. Therefore, as per perspective of a few number of individuals these old places needs to be replaced by the modern architecture buildings due to limited space on the land. Furthermore, these buildings put burden on the government budget countries economy and in order to maintain these old heritage buildings citizens often have to pay more taxes.

All in all, even though, the art galleries, town halls and historical places usually require frequent maintenance, government can earn revenue from these places by organizing exhibitions and from tourist. In my opinion, authorities should preserve these places to keep alive our history.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the economic burden of old buildings is mentioned but not fully explored with specific examples or deeper analysis. While the ideas are relevant, they remain at a general level, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, you should aim to expand your supporting points with more detailed explanations or concrete examples to ensure a more thorough development of your arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a discernible progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'All in all' to link your points. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and sentence-level flow. For example, the transition between the economic burden and the conclusion could be smoother. Overall, the structure is coherent, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'indigenous', 'renovation', 'architecture', and 'obligation'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'despite of costly renovation charges' (should be 'despite the high cost of renovation') and 'technology is infiltrated' (should be 'technology has infiltrated'). These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight a need for more precise usage. To reach a higher band, focus on using less common lexical items more accurately and refining your understanding of collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'one of the most significant factor' (should be 'factors'), 'ways to living lives' (should be 'ways of living'), and 'these old places needs' (should be 'need'). Additionally, there are issues with articles and prepositions, such as 'infiltrated in every corner' (should be 'into'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. Increasing your control over subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve your score.
