Student answer (Band 6.5)

Restoration these days has been a major point of discussion, where some believe that by doing it gets the respect that the old and ancient buildings deserve whereas others disagree with it and support new construction of buildings. I think new infrastructure is today's world's norm. And I totally standby the fact that modern buildings are our future tomorrow. The following paragraphs below will the discussing both the perspectives:

Firstly, Old and ancient buildings are cultural heritage which should be protected and preserved. Turning them into town halls, museums and art galleries is an incredible idea, as it reduces the time, energy and resources of building a new area for required spaces. For instance, Our former Prime minister Ms.Indira Gandhi's residence was turned into a memorial museum after her death by showcasing her art/political collections.

Secondly, Governments replacing the old infrastructure into new modern buildings accessible to the public is an excellent initiative as it would help the future generations to access top-notch resources. Modernisation is required for any nation to flourish and create a new and better tomorrow. In any type of governance be it authoritarian or democratic, the people's money that is given by them to the government in the form of taxes are to be used very cautiously. Before, building any kind of new spaces for the public mindfulness of the bureaucrats and politicians plays a vital role. For example, IIT's in India were setup as new institutions with better infrastructure and up-to-date resources for students that they are one of the world's leading institutions.

Hence, with proper decision making and vigilant behaviours of the elected officials, I think that its very much possible to construct new buildings and public spaces for the upliftment of the society and nation as a whole.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the first body paragraph provides a relevant example regarding the Indira Gandhi memorial, the second paragraph focuses more on the general concept of government spending and the establishment of IITs rather than directly addressing the trade-off between restoring old buildings and building new ones. The position is clear, but the arguments could be more deeply explored to reach a higher band. The introduction is slightly repetitive, and the conclusion is a bit brief.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Hence', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally slightly awkward, such as in the opening sentence where 'by doing it' lacks a clear antecedent. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, but the flow between the general discussion of government spending and the specific topic of building restoration could be more seamless.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at more sophisticated language like 'infrastructure', 'authoritarian', and 'vigilant'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'standby the fact' (should be 'stand by') and 'vigilant behaviours of the elected officials' (which is slightly unnatural in this context). The range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'will the discussing' (should be 'will be discussing'), 'IIT's' (incorrect use of apostrophe for plural), and 'that they are one of the world's leading' (which is a fragmented or run-on structure). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some issues with sentence boundaries and unnecessary capitalization.
