Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that the government should spend money to restore old sites such as art galleries and town halls, even though it can be expensive. However, others argue that the government should demolish those old buildings and rebuild new one. Although both solutions have their own merit, I believe the government should restore those buildings because it represents the culture and heritage of the places.

on the one hand, people who believe in restoration of heritage sites often argue that it represents the culture and it should be protected. To explain further, if younger generation visit those old places, they can understand the culture of the places. For example, in Ahmedabad, there was a Tagor town now consider as memorial place of freedom fighters of ideas. This maintained place represents importance of freedom fighters. As a result, younger people can understand their importance. Hence, spending money on restoring old buildings is important to preserve history and a culture.

On the other hand, demolish old buildings and replacing with modern buildings often justified by saying that it can make the place functional and local can get benefits. Therefore, people believe it should be better option to utilize places by modernizing new buildings. For example, if the government demolish old town halls and replaced with new building, general public can use for their original purpose. This shows that spending money to work modernization projects of old buildings is beneficial for locals.

To conclude, although spending money on replacing older buildings with newer modern buildings can benefit locals, restoring old buildings preserve culture which educate younger generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, though the supporting arguments could be more nuanced. For instance, the example regarding the 'Tagor town' is a bit vague and lacks sufficient detail to fully illustrate the point about cultural preservation. While the position is consistent, the development of the opposing view is somewhat repetitive, focusing primarily on 'functionality' without exploring other potential benefits of modern architecture. Overall, the response meets the requirements for a Band 6.0 as it addresses all parts of the task with relevant ideas, though some areas could be more thoroughly extended.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions are mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is slightly disrupted by grammatical errors or awkward phrasing, such as 'demolish old buildings and replacing with modern buildings often justified'. While the overall progression is logical, the use of cohesive devices is not always flexible or sophisticated, placing this in the Band 6.0 range.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'heritage sites', 'modernization projects', and 'preserve history'. However, there are several word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'memorial place of freedom fighters of ideas' and 'work modernization projects'. These errors do not impede communication, but they demonstrate a limited range that prevents a higher score. To improve, the student should focus on more precise word choices and natural collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and articles, such as 'rebuild new one' (should be 'rebuild new ones'), 'if younger generation visit' (should be 'if the younger generation visits'), and 'demolish old buildings' (should be 'demolishing old buildings'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of the main points. The control of punctuation is generally acceptable, but the frequency of errors in basic grammar structures limits the score to a 6.0.
