Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that preserving historical places such as, public art galleries and historic town halls should not be demolished rather should be restored, while others argue that governments should scrutinize and put more resources into advance buildings. In this essay, I will discuss both views before presenting my own opinion.

On the one hand, old buildings possess a very heart touching feeling for various people, and repairing old structures can be cost effective also limited government resources. For instance, Frere hall in Karachi where many people often visit this place and it has unique structures and historical landmarks. Every year rainfall occurs and some of its structure and color usually fades and manager can not afford to repair this every year. As a result, to maintain this, they usually cover the thatch with plastic sheets so that water does not enter in premises of hall to save both money as well as cultural heritage.

On the other hand, governments should replace outdated structures because if sudden earthquake hits the old buildings can suddenly eradicate and may cause the loss of innocent lives. For example, to modernize urban infrastructure governments can collect funds and focus on constructing modern facilities. As this step will make peoples' live more easier and accessible without any fear people can live freely. Consequently, significant improvement may be seen by replacing old buildings with new ones.

In my opinion, I believe preserve only historically significant buildings are predominantly more viable approach and replacing dangerous and harmful buildings with a modern ones is the best option.

In conclusion, natural cultural treasures should always remain the first priority, but if damage occurs then backup plan is also sometimes necessary as modernization is cost effective. However, if there is a threat being observed in any old buildings then replacing them with improved ones is a sustainable option for individuals, government should take note on this carefully for the betterment of society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat inconsistent. The example of Frere Hall is relevant but the explanation regarding the plastic sheets is slightly confusing and does not fully support the argument about cost-effectiveness. The second body paragraph regarding safety is better developed. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully explained with clear logical links to the prompt. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and introduces new ideas about 'backup plans' that were not previously discussed, which slightly weakens the overall coherence of the argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'Consequently' are used to signal shifts in the argument. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as in the conclusion where the transition between the two views is slightly muddled. Referencing is generally clear, but the connection between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother to improve the overall readability.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. There are some awkward collocations, such as 'heart touching feeling' and 'advance buildings,' which are not natural in this context. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'cultural heritage' and 'urban infrastructure,' the overall range is somewhat limited. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated synonyms and ensuring that word choices are contextually appropriate rather than relying on literal translations or overly simplistic descriptions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'if sudden earthquake hits the old buildings can suddenly eradicate' (incorrect verb usage and missing articles) and 'peoples' live more easier' (incorrect pluralization and comparative structure). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct article usage would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
