Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is thought by many individuals that the restoration of old buildings should be done be government, including town halls and art galleries, while others believe that old buildings should be replaced by new, modern buildings. In my opinion, the replacement of old buildings with new ones might be bring more more benefits for the public in the present scenario.

Many people support the idea of restoring old buildings such as town halls and art galleries due to the perseverance of history and their culture. When people visit to such old buildings, then they not only get an opportunity to enhance their knowledge about the history and background of that particular place, but also they can stay in touch with their roots by visiting such historical places. These old buildings also helps to attract the tourists from other countries, resulting in boosting the economy of that particular nation due to their spending on flights and travel.

As per others, old buildings should be replaced by moderns buildings such as schools, hospitals and daycares. If government focus on establishing educations centers, especially in rural areas, then it can be helpful for the local children to get education instead of wasting a large amount of money on the restoration of old buildings. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the essay is incomplete, as it ends abruptly mid-sentence in the final paragraph. This prevents the full development of the argument and leaves the conclusion unfinished. While the main ideas—cultural preservation versus modern infrastructure needs—are relevant and clearly presented, the lack of a proper conclusion and the incomplete final paragraph significantly impact the overall task achievement. To reach a higher band, ensure that all parts of the prompt are fully explored and that the essay reaches a logical, complete conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'In my opinion', 'Many people support', and 'As per others' are used to signal shifts in the argument. However, the flow is disrupted by the abrupt ending of the text. Referencing is generally clear, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate for the task, but the failure to complete the final paragraph makes the overall structure feel unfinished, which limits the effectiveness of the logical progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas about history, economy, and public services. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'perseverance of history' and 'chronic diseases', though some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'perseverance of history' (preservation would be more accurate) and 'well-beings matters'. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'moderns buildings' and 'educations centers'. The range is sufficient to communicate the main points, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'be government' (by the government), 'might be bring', 'buildings also helps', and 'allowing to rise the economy'. These errors are noticeable and occasionally distract the reader, though they do not completely impede communication. The control over complex structures is inconsistent, and there are several instances of missing articles or incorrect verb forms. Improving accuracy in basic sentence construction and subject-verb agreement is essential for a higher score.
