Student answer (Band 6.0)

Old versus new, which is better?

Some people believe that the ancient buildings such as art galleries and town halls should be restored whereas others argue that the buildings should be replaced by modern century buildings that are in accordance to today's era. In my opinion, the buildings should not be demolished and replaced. This essay will discuss both points along with my opinion.

The old buildings such as schools, town halls has a history attached to it. In old times, all the houses, buildings were constructed like an art. For instance, Taj Mahal is a monument in India. It was constructed hundreds of years ago and need restoration every few months because of the special marble it was constructed with. The cost of the restoration is high but it attracts visitors from all around the world and is regarded as one of the world's 7 wonders.

On the contrast, if all the buildings are demolished then, there will be no educational tours for the students of schools and universities to show them how things were in the past. Learners could only learn about the history in books and will have nothing to imagine. One positive point in having modern place then restoring the old one is we can possibly save a lot of money and use it for something beneficial for the view

In conclusion, I believe that the old buildings such as monuments, church, galleries should not to replaced to maintain their historical importance and to attract more visitors or tourists to showcase the history of the place.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While the example of the Taj Mahal is relevant, the explanation regarding the benefits of modern buildings is underdeveloped and lacks depth. The argument could be strengthened by exploring the practicalities of urban planning or the economic necessity of modern infrastructure. The conclusion restates the position, but the essay would benefit from more detailed supporting points to fully satisfy the requirements of a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'For instance' and 'On the contrast', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, although the connection between the paragraph about the Taj Mahal and the broader argument about town halls could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion, which helps the reader follow the writer's train of thought.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. Phrases like 'modern century buildings' and 'in accordance to today's era' are slightly awkward. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary such as 'demolished', 'restoration', and 'monument', but the range is somewhat restricted. To improve, the student should focus on more sophisticated collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The errors in word choice do not impede communication, but they prevent the response from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('old buildings... has a history') and incorrect preposition usage ('in accordance to'). Additionally, there are minor errors with articles and verb forms ('should not to replaced'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points. A greater focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would significantly improve the score.
