Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people beleive that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored, while others think that governments should replace them with modern buildings.

On the one hand, there are several reasons to restore old buildings. First, old buildings are an important part of a city's histroy and culture. They can show how people lived and worked in the past. They can also attract tourists, which can bring money to the local area. For example, many tourists visit old buildings in cities suc as lahore because they want to see their histroy and traditional design. Moreover, retoring a building can keep the special character of a city.

On the other hand, some people beleive that old buildings should be replaced with modern ones. The main reason is that old buildings can be expensive to repair and maintain. Modern buildings can also be safer, more comfortable and more useful. For instance, a new town hall can have better technology, more space and facilities for disabled people. Governments can also use money saved from repairs for others important services, such as schools and hospitals.

In my opinion, old buildings should be restored when they have important historical or cultural value. However, if a buildings is very unsafe or too expensive to repair, it is better to replace it with a modern building. In this way governments can protect histroy while also providing better facilities for people.

Overall, both restoration and replacement have benefits. I beleive a balance the two choices is the best solution.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, such as the mention of tourism and cultural heritage for restoration, and cost-efficiency and safety for replacement. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more nuanced examples or explore the implications of these choices in greater depth, as the current arguments are somewhat brief and could be further extended to demonstrate a more sophisticated level of critical thinking.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Moreover', and 'For instance' are used effectively to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is somewhat mechanical and predictable. To improve, the student should aim for a more varied and natural use of cohesive links and ensure that referencing within and between sentences is more fluid to enhance the overall flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is sufficient for the task and allows for clear communication. The student uses topic-specific terms like 'restored', 'cultural value', and 'facilities'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'beleive' (believe), 'histroy' (history), 'suc' (such), and 'retoring' (restoring). These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the student should work on spelling accuracy and attempt to incorporate a wider range of less common lexical items, such as 'architectural heritage' or 'financial burden', to demonstrate greater precision and sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and grammatically sound, though there are occasional errors, such as 'if a buildings is' (if a building is) and 'balance the two' (balance between the two). Punctuation is generally accurate. The range of structures is adequate for the task, but to reach a higher band, the student should aim to use a wider variety of complex grammatical forms, such as conditional clauses or passive voice, with greater consistency and fewer minor errors.
