Student answer (Band 6.5)

The debate about restoring the old buildings or replacing them with modern buildings has been continuing in the society for a very long time now. This essay will support bpth the views along with my perosnl opinion on this ongping debate.

Some people believe that old buildings, such as art galleries and town halls should be rstored, even though this can be expensive. Restoring old buildings will keep our culture and rich heritage alive and modern world can get familiar with the history of art. Art is made to preserve and people beleive that it should continue to exist as long as we live. Preserving art galleries and town halls will keep the art culture alive and thus support younger generation to gain knowledge about our culture.

While others argue that government should replace the old building with modern high-rise architecture. People believe that humans shoudl adapt to the growing technology and not live with the out-dated ideology. Modern buildings benefit societies and improve the economy. Modern or high-rise buildings can be used for many purposed such as apartments and large office spaces which support the growth of the country.

In my opinion, old buildings and town halls should be preserved even though it might be expensive. For example, I live in a small city called St. Catharines in Canada and my city has many old churches and art galleries whoch this city look beautiful. The cost of maintaining these buildings comes from the funds raised by the government from general public. In the world of emerging technology, art should be preserved as it connects us to our roots.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the cultural importance of heritage versus the economic benefits of modernization. However, the development is somewhat limited; the arguments are repetitive, particularly regarding the 'cultural' aspect. The example provided about St. Catharines is a good attempt to personalize the argument, but it could be more deeply integrated into the reasoning to reach a higher band. Overall, the position is consistent throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'While others argue' and 'In my opinion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as the use of 'whoch' (which) and 'this city' in the final paragraph, which slightly disrupts the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'out-dated ideology' and 'emerging technology'. However, there are several spelling errors throughout the text, including 'bpth', 'perosnl', 'ongping', 'rstored', 'beleive', and 'shoudl'. These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not impede overall communication. To improve, the student should focus on proofreading to eliminate these basic slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are persistent grammatical errors, such as 'The debate... has been continuing in the society' (article usage), 'modern world can get familiar' (missing article), and 'whoch this city look beautiful' (incorrect relative pronoun and verb agreement). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear. The range of structures is sufficient, but greater accuracy in subject-verb agreement and article usage is needed to move into the higher bands.
