Student answer (Band 6.0)

Changes in old architectures is a good decision. Some members of society believe that some halls as well as art museums ought to be renovated. While others argue that government has to take some steps in regards to this. This essay will discuss both the views before explaining why I believe it should be replace with new ones.

On the one hand, many people think that old buildings like town halls and art galleries, ought to be restored, even if it can be costly. The main reason is cultural value. Nowadays, people are not aware of their culture and they are visiting this kind of places because they like to post something different in their social media. If this places will restore very well, younger people understands the value of them. Cost is not a major issue. It should managed by government fund. For instance, Taj Mahal is one of the most beautiful place which was made in reminds of some good people. If it is replaced by some other building, no one will understands the value of Taj Mahal.

On the other hand, Nowadays, modern buildings become an attraction of the city. Other folks believe that old structures are replaced by new buildings. The main reason is having a good feedback as well as to increase tourism. If the city has a new, modern buildings, the value of that city increases and it becomes famous. I strongly agree with this opinion because tourism plays a vital role in this era. The city has a great future and younger people enjoys living there as well as they feel proud.

In conclusion, although both the views have merit, I completely agree with view that government ought to replace old buildings with new, modern buildings.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument for restoration relies on a single example (the Taj Mahal), which is not a 'town hall' or 'art gallery' as specified in the prompt. The argument for replacement is also quite brief, focusing primarily on tourism without exploring other potential benefits like urban efficiency or safety. To reach a higher band, you should provide more detailed, logical explanations for your points and ensure your examples are directly relevant to the specific types of buildings mentioned in the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'In conclusion' to signal the structure. However, the flow within paragraphs is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing and repetitive sentence structures. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'this kind of places', where the pronoun 'this' does not match the plural noun. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are several instances of unnatural collocation and word choice errors, such as 'Changes in old architectures' (should be 'architecture') and 'If this places will restore' (should be 'If these places are restored'). You rely on fairly simple vocabulary throughout. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and collocations related to urban planning and cultural heritage, and pay closer attention to pluralisation and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader's flow. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('modern buildings become', 'younger people understands'), incorrect verb tenses, and missing articles. For example, 'If this places will restore' is grammatically incorrect; it should be 'If these places are restored'. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focus on mastering basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement.
