Student answer (Band 6.5)

Even though few individuals argue that the government should replace the old constructions such as town halls with new modernized building, others believe that the old structures should be restored into their original form only. I really think that instead of replacing the old buildings, they should be restored back as it helps to conserve the culture of that place and keep a piece of history alive.

On one hand, many people argue that buildings such as old courts, restaurants, town halls and others should be replaced by modern constructions as it is less costly than restoring them. Additionally, we can reconstruct them with managing the space more efficiently. New areas can be created for leisure activities and storage too. For example, the supreme court of India was reconstructed into a new building which helped by increasing the files compartment, good air circulation and more natural light. This helps the employees working there.

On the other hand, many individuals suggests that old building should be restored into their original constructions as this represents the history and culture of that place. An old building such as palace, art galleries is a huge tourist attraction and can generate revenue which can help the government with other projects and public welfare. Also, this buildings holds the historical and cultural significance of that place giving it an identity of it's own. I personally stand in the favour of restoration rather than replacement. For example, the restoration of Ram mandir in India into its original old construction helped so much in tourism that it has over 10 million dollars of revenue every year. This is a good advantage to any government.

In conclusion, though some people suggest that we should replace the old buildings as it costs too much for the restoration, I believe we should not replace those places and restore them how they were already.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic benefits of restoration versus the functional efficiency of modern buildings. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the arguments are clear, they could be extended further with more nuanced analysis. For instance, the discussion on 'managing space more efficiently' is a good point but lacks depth. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the examples provided, such as the Supreme Court of India, are relevant to the topic, though the specific details regarding 'files compartment' could be phrased more naturally.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, moving from the introduction to the two opposing views and finally the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there is occasional repetition of phrasing (e.g., 'old buildings'). Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly rather than relying on simple sentence starters.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'restored,' 'modernized,' 'revenue,' and 'significance.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'restored back' (redundant), 'reconstructed into a new building' (slightly awkward), and 'stand in the favour of' (should be 'in favor of'). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but more sophisticated or precise vocabulary would be needed to reach a higher band. Spelling is generally accurate, though 'it's' is incorrectly used for the possessive 'its'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the supreme court,' 'a palace') and pluralization ('this buildings'). Subject-verb agreement is occasionally inconsistent, such as 'many individuals suggests.' Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors that persist throughout the text. The writer demonstrates an ability to construct complex sentences, but the control over these structures is not yet consistent enough for a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical slips would significantly improve the overall accuracy.
