Some people believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored, even though this can be costly. Others argue that governments should replace them with new, modern buildings.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this jet-set age the society is polarised into two groups almost equally wather old buildings should be saved the way they are regardless the amount money required or government should exchange them with newly constructed buildings. Different people have their divergent mindsets, however, my views are in synchronisation with the former school of thought.

On the one hand, there are certain causes that can be held accountable behind people's views about the latter notion. Firstly,

Federal authorities should plan to construct modern buildings due to low maintenance costs, better structural plan additionally, more parking spaces can be craeted for the ease of general public. secondly, new buildings can be made in such a way that covers spaces to become more efficient and keep in use and by installing ecofriendly supplies for the betterment of the environment.

On the other hand, without any qualms, I do favour of preserving old buildings due to proof of our history. The old buildings carry historical values that are required as a proof to the society to keep cultural roots strong and respectful. Moreover, old buildings carry tourism due to its unique artistic and historical value that a modern architecture can never compete with. To epitome, Bathinda is a city in Punjab that has 2000 years old that attracts tourists from all around the world and provide business to the local comudities. Hence, it worth spending and preserving the old monuments because there is no way to reconstruct them.

To recapitulate, despite masses may vary in their opinions, however by keeping into mind all the points just mentioned above, I would like to reiterate that I do concur with the former notion.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While the arguments for modern buildings (maintenance, efficiency) and historical preservation (culture, tourism) are relevant, they lack depth and specific elaboration. The example of Bathinda is a good attempt at support, but the phrasing is slightly unclear. The introduction is a bit convoluted, making the initial position statement harder to follow than it should be. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully extended with more detailed explanations or logical consequences.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the one hand', 'Moreover', and 'To recapitulate', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'To epitome', which is an incorrect usage. Additionally, the referencing within sentences is sometimes weak, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints, which helps the overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but there are several instances of awkward phrasing and incorrect word choices, such as 'jet-set age', 'in synchronisation with', and 'comudities' (likely a misspelling of communities). The student attempts some less common vocabulary, but the control is inconsistent. There are also minor spelling errors throughout the text. To improve, focus on using collocations more naturally and ensuring that the vocabulary chosen accurately reflects the intended meaning in an academic context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles, prepositions, and subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the society is polarised', 'regardless the amount money', 'despite masses may vary'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences and missing commas. These errors do not typically impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. More attention to basic grammatical accuracy and sentence construction is needed.
