IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that old buildings, such as town halls and art galleries, should be restored, even though this can be costly. Others argue that governments should replace them with new, modern buildings.

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Architecture of the monuments and buildings of the country is significant. It is believed by history enthusiasts that traditional buildings should be renovated which might be expensive. Others, however, debate replacing these with modern buildings is better. I being an admirer of the heritage support the former view.

Antique buildings represent the place’s culture and history which is the primary reason to support their restoration. The majority of the buildings were constructed by the famous personalities of the history representing some special happenings. Demolishing these buildings will remove traces of the history. Renewing it might be expensive but worth because these buildings are also bringing a huge number of the tourists to the nation. Ultimately, this tourism generates employment and adds to the country’s economy which will approximately balance the expenses made to renew these monuments.

The opponents of the restoration believe that the authorities should invest this money in building modern structures. Since many parts of the country needs more schools and hospitals which can serve the community, money spent on constructing these will benefit the society. Another reason is that these old monuments are built on based of tradition architects and structures, incorporating modern technological innovations to these buildings will cost huge amount of money using which new building can easily be built and maintained for years
